There is no such thing as waste, in the same sense that there is no such thing as cold. You can't have cold, it doesn't exist. It's the absence of heat. Waste, similarly, is the absence of profit. Waste means "You could profit from this, but you didn't." But if there's an alternative method that results in even more profit, you should take that one.

For example, if you paid $100 for a rock, and you were hungry, it would not be "wasteful" to buy a hamburger instead of eating the rock, because you can profit more through buying the hamburger than through eating the rock. You would be "throwing away" the rock, but you would be profiting more overall, because you aren't eating a rock.

Not to say that his original ending is as bad as eating a rock; I haven't even seen it. I was just illustrating the point. See Loss aversion, Sunk costs
