I came over to the friend's place, fully sure Im going to watch it on TV. Unfortunately, I got shitfaced about ten hours before it even started, so I kind of missed that. Now I cant find a single recording of it. :(

The wire-fu hermaphrodite running through the fake leaves.  WTF was that?  An hour of that boring shit?  The kilt fiddlers were almost entertaining compared to that.

And opening ceremonies have become exercises in neurotic nationalism.  I'm almost glad America didn't get the next Olympics:

"WE INVENTED THE INTERNET, MOTHERFUCKERS!  WE ROCK!"

*Sigh*

It almost makes you miss the Soviet Union.  At least in those days the Free World stuck to more inclusive themes:

"Please don't nuke each other ... let's play sports instead!"  Predictable, but comfortingly universal.  At the time it seemed cliche', but I didn't realize how good we had it.

What could be more insipid than yet another message of World Peace aimed at the United States and Soviet Union?  How about:

"WE INVENTED PAPER, MOTHERFUCKERS!  WE MATTER!"

Okay, thanks, China, paper is really super-awesome, almost as awesome as the stern-post rudder.  Extra ration of fruit cup.

Don't fall for Ancient Egypt's lies.

I thoroughly enjoyed at least the visuals of the show, and the crazy fiddlers and stuff. It dragged on toooooooo long though, and the hydraulic failure at the end really made them looks stupid after hours of build up.

Also, Donald Sutherland should narrate /everything/

Hmm, not sure if papyrus counts.  Perhaps.

London 2012 should be... fun.

There are riots breaking out because of the Olympics.

I only watched part of it (and missed the Fun part it seems)... The fiddler was pretty cool, and their projectors-aimed-at-everything mentality at least added some nice special effects. Although overall, my impression was closer to that of "high school play with a multi-million dollar budget" than of awe-inspiring olympic opening.

As I saw this topic I thought it would be some sarcastic comment about the guy who died rodeling for the olymics. We've had it on the news as headline for a while now. For clearity: The guy apparently made a steering mistake and crashed out of the line and into a metal support with 140 km/h. Broken neck and died shortly after.
