For X16 yes, you get it from the guy in the bunker after either succeeding or failing to protect the one dude from zombies.
Kruglov, but it's easier to succeed, after all, he's wearing an equivalent to the SEVA Suit and there's just zombies and a few mercenaries.
He'll still die easily if you don't rush ahead of him and waste all the zombies before they wreck him. On more than one try he died as my character went into the cutscene by the bus, making me think he was supposed to die in that mission.

If he dies odds are you're doing something VERY wrong. Kruglov is one of the easiest FPS NPCs to escort ever. Not to mention the suit he's wearing is like a super SEVA suit.

The only real problem with him is the snorks after the tunnel in Yantar the second time. If you don't kill them fast they'll slice him up.

Yeah, I mean the second part where you go through the tunnel and black out at the bus. The first part was piss easy, the second one I had to restart around for times, once for him dying right after running out of the tunnel to a snork and some zombies and the other times dying during the time where I had no control whatsoever.

He died before I got to him :( . And no, I don't have a save before that. It seems that there is a large amount of radiation surrounding the entrance to the dark valley; is there another way in?

Edit: Never mind I just boozed up and ran through the radiation.

dont think so, although there is another way out of the dark valley. Just neck a load of vodka (those syringes are for pussies) and run. Also theres some awsome artifacts in vanilla just inside the dark valley.

I've never had any real problems with that radiation. Look for a better suit before going in, I never get any anymore and I have a basic scientist's suit. Hell, the STALKER suit will negate most of the damage.

The SEVA suit also auto-injects radiation medicine when it gets too high.

And now I'm in the reactor and fought my way through a good 60 Monolith soldiers before finding myself locked in a strange room. There are six blue spinning glowy things making a circle around a green hologram. I tried interacting with everything and shooting everything and nothing works. The door out is locked and the door I took in closed behind me, locking me in. There is one enemy that my minimap detects, so I'm thinking that this may be the problem.

And now I'm in the reactor...

Goddammit.  Okay, I stopped playing Stalker all week to stay on top of classwork, and failed at that anyway.  It's Stalkan time.

I actually put the game down for this first week, but so far the lack of actual work leaves me with plenty of time for this.

Unless I'm stuck in here forever.

I think you have to shoot the blue things until they explode

I didn't think of that after emptying a whole clip of my pistol into one of them and then knifing it several times. It seems one needs to use an actual rifle to get it done in under a clip.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
EDIT: And yes you need to shoot it with an actual rifle or something with similar power.

You just need to hit the glass parts. Using the knife stab will break them in one hit. Go fast so Pyrogeists don't rape you.

You know what's fun about screwing around with the Freedom/Duty fight in SoC?  For some reason, saving and then loading inside the big Freedom base at the Warehouses causes every guy in the base to instantly telepathically aggro to the Duty guys in the farmhouse.  (Attn: Duty - You might want to pick a hideout that's not within sight of the sniper you want me to kill.  Those shots plinking off your armor while you're giving me the mission were annoying.)  So, they all go nuts, and I climb up the watchtower with the sniper to be killed, and watch the entire Freedom garrison file one-by-one out of their compound to the farmhouse, where they all get shot in the face.  Then I knife the sniper and grenade the Freedom colonel, and woo mission complete.

Except for two guys still alive at the gate who machinegun me from halfway across the map.  Fuck.

I did it the MANLY way.

Skulls team attacks from the hole in the wall. I charge the gate and shoot every single motherfucker that looks at me funny.

It was a pretty effective strategy in the middle of the night.

Also I don't recommend trying this in serious play.
