That's what Dwarf Fortress is all about, and considering you're on Bay12, I assume you enjoy DF. Sure you can wall yourself in with nothing but a farm plot, but do you really want to?

Never played DF before, actually.

I'm a math student.  Any sorts of constraints that have to do with "laws of physics" or that thing called "reality" piss me off.

nadaka.  Thanks for that long explanation.  It seems really interesting.  Unfortunately, it's too late for me and I need my sleep but I bookmarked it to read it later.  I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
