Idea:  have pumps fill a chamber over said brook. For epic win! Seriously though. I'm having so much fun with this embark.

Holy crap, this is good stuff.  Remember, this is a recipe book:  include detailed instructions, pictures, maniacal laughter, victims, everything!

Try this:

Give your favorite noble a lavish living space above a magma vent, partially channeled out for extra warmth (pardon the sloppy ASCII):
W=wall
m=liquid hot mag-ma
D=door
WWWWWWWW
WmmmmmmmW
Wm           mW
Wm           mW
Wmm       mmW
WWWWDWWW
      W    W
      W    W
      W    W
      W    W
      W    W
      W    W
      W    W
      W    W

Wait till he sleeps then channel out the last few blocks suspending the area.  Ensure that the room is well away from the productive members of society, as the steam is deadly.  Bonus points for multiple nobles, and extra bonus points if you can improve on this.

Make a long room over magma. Double doors at both ends. Make a 2-wide drawbridge over it, with double doors blocking it off. Put 1 plump helmet on the bridge, and forbid it. Put many beds on the floors on each end of the bridge (not on the bridge), make them bedrooms, and assign them to nobles. When you have enough nobles, lock them in. Wait a while. Unforbid the plump helmet. As the nobles charge at the precious food, lock down the doors, then set the bridge to be pulled.

Hmm... Well, here's a creative solution that doesn't have a lot of entertainment value. Until you write a story about the suffering and the existential ponderings of the trapped dwarf.

Build a short wall. Done? Ok, now build an up stair two spaces to the east. Go up, and build a down stair. Now bridge the space with a floor. Now order it to be deconstructed. Make sure this wall is in full view of the other dwarves, and possibly food and drink.
Now watch the laziest, most job-less child, noble or otherwise useless @#$(@ go dig their own grave, then bemoan their fate with no materials to build an exit for themselves, forced to watch the other dwarves go about their business, eating and getting drunk and never wanting to help the lazy @#$@! get down.

Rinse and repeat when you need another plot device in your succession fort.

Very Situational, but
Code: [Select]
XpppX
XPPPX
X___X
XGGGX
X___X                 X=Sheer rock wall
X___X                 Pp=Pump (pumps to the P from the p)
X___X                 G=Floodgate
X___G...EEE           E=Fortress Entrance
X___G...EEE           _=Brook
X___G...EEE
X___X
X___X
X___X
X___X
...
Optional:
X___X
XGGGX
X___X

To prototype my earlier ideas.
The pumps would (naturally) be powered from upstream. The Upper Floodgates would hold back the rushing tides of despair, and the lower gates keep said tides out of the fort. The optional gates at the end make sure that the migrants gobbos don't flee, and take their precious ore with them. Most importantly, however, is that this trap can be used for both migrants AND invaders. Also, it doesn't NEED to be on a brook, but that will ensure:

1: constant water for the pumps
2: the most awesome you can have without magma.
3:  ???
4: Profit

Flaws include possible flooding and lack of magma.

EDIT for clarity of diagram.

Make a water smashing workstation trap.

Attach trap to river, have bridge hooked to repeater, use bridge to smash water and suck in dwarves.

1 Build a 1x1 wall with ramps on either side
2 Build a lever on the wall, and a floor hatch above one of the ramps
3 Attach the lever to the hatch, pull it so it opens, then remove the ramp that it doesn't cover
4 Assign the lever to be pulled by a dwarf you don't like

This expolits the stupidity of dwarves because they don't consider jumping down, or pulling the lever again, so they stay up there until they die.  It could be reused if you add in an access bridge that is controlled somewhere else.

Ive just finished installing 2 fire-imps into my countess's quarters.

I will pull the lever to release them once the cage traps are finished being installed so that i can re-use them. (the fire imps)

Deny them all weapons and armor and make them a hunter.  He will die in some God forsaken wilderness wrestling an elk.

At this point the entirety of your fortress will display the most amazing trait in all of dwardom... the inate ability to sense when someone, somewhere has died and left valuables unclaimed.

The only dwarf that lacks this inate extra-sensory-book-keeping ability is, well, the book keeper.....

I second that LOL, and add a ROFL.

I really want that one as a "when". I want "grubs", and "virgin woman" to turn into a dragon. and monkey children to suddenly sprout wings. And I want the Dwarven Mutant Academy to only gain their powers upon reaching puberty. I also have a whole host of odd creatures that only make sense if I divide them into children and adults.

Also, tadpoles.
