Remember that in the new version every map will have SOME magma which will help keep the lumber cost of soap down.

For the sake of nitpicking. There will be magma on "most" maps and it will be on the "lowest levels" ... which can be oh idunno 50-100 Z levels down. Is it really cost effective to pump magma up that far? or will it errupt and travel up your tunnels consuming miners like hairy, sweaty candy?

Yeah,  I fear surface magma's still going to be an essential starting fixture for me. At 50 z-levels down that's getting prohibitive.

I dunno. Maybe I'll be more willing to bend a bit for an otherwise-perfect site, but I expect I'll still set my "volcanism" pretty darn high in initial worldgen options, and leave "volcanoes" at 200+.

How is magma going to keep the wood cost of soap down? You need wood for the ash, regardless. Wood burning doesn't need any extra fuel.

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.

Making the glass vials takes wood/magma as well.

Also the big difference with 'Deep Magma' is that starting without Magma on/near the surface is no longer a permanent drag limiting your options but rather a challenge. It's probably going to be difficult to get to the magma without a well equipped military.

I was excited when I saw the one saying dwarves won't follow the squad leader like he's their babysitter.

Never thought about it, but it's gotta be disturbing as hell to wake up and have a bunch of bloody bearded horrors covered in vomit staring down at you.

I like the idea of the hammerer being the doctor. After all, he's gotta practice his medical skills somehow.   :D

With these vast underground caverns does that mean there will be giant hanging stalactites we will be digging down into as well?

So in theory, I could possibly hollow one out, fill it with magma / blood / liquid iron, then channel around it and drop it onto the underground demons below?

I think stalactites andstalagmites were mentioned in one of Toady's posts but I forget.

If not you could just make one yourself.
