Tame gremlins (and other speakers) - what good are they?
« on: February 10, 2010, 11:23:05 am »

So, I got a couple of gremlins from a caravan - 2 from the same caravan, and both of them male and with the title "Hunter", and they both dropped a bunch of hunting equipment (crossbows, etc) when I got them out of their cages...

Anyway, I managed to butcher one (don't see them in the animal screen, but can enable butcher when viewing them individually), but none of the resulting stuff will get picked up, so I eventually designate a graveyard, and it gets put in there (fat, bones, skin, meat, everything).

So, the one that's left, I can't assign jobs to... and I can't butcher it... can't make it a pet...  what good are tame creatures that can speak?  I suppose I could chain them as sentries... but no, then they would die of thirst!  I didn't check, but since they get put in a graveyard, they might even take up coffin space (as a pet, I would guess?)!!

Seems rather silly and counter-productive.  Having one gives no benefit and possible even some small costs.

Or am I missing something?

Not everything is advantagous. One thing to consider is that some dwarves like certain animals and will derive a happy thought from coming near one.

They actually drink your stuff? That's not normal. Have you messed with their raws?

Personally, I would find it a delicious irony to post a gremlin as a lever guard. Either an irony or a fatal mistake, depending on how habilitated the gremlin is.

intelligent creature's will only come from slave using races and don't do anything. they may or may not eat and drink but they do need to. Getting them at all screws up something in the current version because they where never meant to be made pets. they can be assigned jobs with stuff like manager but they will not do any jobs that require a workshop so for example they can fish but they cannot process the fish.

So it seems I accidentally put my canteen in my wheelbarrow and didn't notice... and then I got really thirsty... so right before going to sleep I go to take a swig from my canteen and... end up snorting a line of low-grade meth.
