Is anyone likely to want some fortifications built? If the bandits know about this place then they might come back...

But fortifications don't seem all that useful anyway...

Perhaps they'd be more useful with an engineer. If I die and we still don't have an engineer or other support classes then I guess I'll become one.

the thing is that a fortification won't hold an enemy for long, and won't do anything to incoming bullets. So they buy you, maybe, 1 or two turns, and kind of trap you a little as well. Well placed they can be a nice little confidence booster that can limit the number of fronts you need to cover, but there are so many things to spend money on and I just don't feel confident that it is worth it. Not that we can reasonably place fortifications before we see the map...

What's the bet that we arrive to the burning remains on an oil derrick with bandits hooting and hollering behind a network of heavy machine gun nests and minefields?

Then I guess we ask very nicely for Cheddarius to give us the ability to defuse or otherwise neutralise mines, then we blast away the machine guns and hope that we don't experience a total team kill.
Though if the entire point's to defend the derrick I doubt that Cheddarius would just have our objective failed before we get there. But anyway, in the event that we get fuel, should I make a flamethrower weapon? (Question for Cheddarius)

Flamethrower would have to have limited ammo.

If it only fires in a line three or so spaces long and had comparatively low damage per space it would fulfil the role of being useful in tight quarters but lack the range or stopping power to be useful against a spread out opponent...

Fortifications absorb bullets.
You should get an engineer. God wills it of you.
No flamethrower.
The oil derrick will still be fine when you're there. They're bandits, not an army. Besides, if they had taken the derrick, the drivers would turn back and call for more help instead of just throwing you in.

Are you sure? I sort of want to blow up an oil derrick with a single well placed explosion.

In my hypothetical combo players, did I mention a combo of myself and zchris?

Someone call fer an engineer?

I'll make a character sheet in a second, unless I'm not allowed. Then, well, blah.

EDIT: Would it be possible to have a TF2 engineer or something like it?

It could be years, man.
But the last round was, I believe, from the start of May up till now, and the one before was something like February-May.
However, this round will be severely accelerated. I will push people to get in turns as fast as possible.
