Newb: Problems with my military...
« on: February 10, 2010, 09:07:59 am »

I've made baracks near the entrance to my fortress, complete with food storage and dining room so that they don't have to ever go downstairs and therefore can react quickly to intruders BUT they just don't use their damn dining room... so they spend half their time walking up and down... I even have asigned a dining table to every one of them but it didn't help.
Second thing is that I have an elite wrestle who shall become a marksdwarf. I enabled the crossbow for him and I made an archery range with an ammo storage nearby but he doesn't use it and continues to spar wrestling with the others. He won't carry bolts either...
Can someone help me?

Annoying, isn't it? They eat food in the order in which it was made, last in first out. This will be fixable using burrows in the next version.

Are you using the latest version of dwarf fortress, at least 40d11? This bug should have been fixed.

Otherwise: check his inventory for possible stuff clogging up his left hand (wrestled off socks is a common one.)  Also, try giving him a quiver. And, I think they might not want to waste metal bolts on training, so ensure there are wooden or bone ones available.

Are you sure this is the case?

They seem to go for the closest drink when they are thirsty. I haven't watched long enough for food to know.

WELL, just looking at the wiki it says that distance does make a difference.

(Look under the "Eat" subsection.)

However, I find that the little sods will go to the wrong food store nine times out of ten, prefering the central store where food is taken straight from the farms. Either way, in the next version we will have a lot more control.

Did you officially activate the range? You have to tell the game from which direction you want the dwarfs to shoot at the target. Also, do you have quivers available for him to put the bolts in?

Concerning my first question: Would it be possible to lock my military in their training grounds with barracks, dining room and lots of food and drink, i mean would there be any drawbacks?

Second question: Don't really know which version I use downloaded it with this:http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=31928.0 noob-tutorial. Where can I see which version I use?
I did activate the range, the guy who shall become a marksdwarf has a quiver, there are lots of bone bolts around+crossbows... how do i know which inventory slots are the ones for his hands? Maybe the problem is that he is also captain of the guard atm?

View each of the items in his inventory - hit TAB a few times so it takes up more of the screen, and you should see indicators on each item saying where it's located. Once you find anything in "left hand" or "right hand" that isn't a gauntlet, mark it for dumping (and make sure you have an active Garbage Dump activity zone) and wait for a refuse hauler to walk up and take it away.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
