Presenting Vassal! The table top game emulator!
« on: February 10, 2010, 04:30:52 am »

Did you used to piss off the parents by taking over the dining room table as you played these some but seldom used board, card and war games?

Did you used to get banished to the garage for this vary reason?

Or maybe you're family used to play these games as a group, getting togther and playing robo rally, or starfire, and risk?

Well, now thanks to Vassal engine, those game can be played live or by email over the amazing thing called the internet!

It has well over a hundred modules for various games, and the ability to create new modules!

http://www.vassalengine.org

Module List

Give it a look, lets get a game going. I'm hoping for roborally, or B5: A Call to Arms personally but I'm game for anything up their really.

Well, this isn't really news here, check out the 40k thread, especially the end, but vassal is a nice little program.

Argh... Why... JAVA?

*shrugs*

Its platform independent, fairly universal around OSs. Dicking around solo, it doesnt have seeming render lag for placing objects on the game grid.

Give it a shot.

Or did I miss read this and you dont have java?

It's a resource hog, and it often lags horribly in multiplayer. Not that it's that apparent, given everything's turn based, but still. Still a nice platform, I played V40k on it for a while, then everyone kind of lost interest in that, myself included.

Of course I do have Java, but other languages are also multiplatform and not incredible CPU hoes.
Also, saying Java is good because it works on all systems is like saying anal sex is good because it works on all genders.

Once you go back you can never go back.

On topic, I would be willing to play a game or two of something on Vassal, but I would likely have to be taught anything more esoteric than stratego.

Speaking of which, let's play some Stratego.  Stratego rules.

I might be able to play some stratego, but my Java is all screwed up because I'm on an old crappy mac laptop.
Most Java things that are downloads don't work.

Yeah, I'm stuck with an old version of Java.

Anybody know where to get my hands on a BSG (based on the new show) module? I see it listed as being recently played on the 'who's online' list but can't for the life of me find where the module is.

Have you tried asking on their ghost town of a forum?

I got a response within 36 hours to my question.

Is the BSG a space wargame?

Also, I'm cool with teaching games, and strageo is freakin boss. I'm up for a game for that. I'm active late generally on PST.

No, there is a BSG game that's a space combat sim but that is no the one I'm interested in. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=18&esem=1 is the game in particular, with it's Pegasus expansion that adds a whole other layer of deception and politicking
