I saw a mod that is packaged with 40d17. does this mean that 17 is good enough for public use or is it still... messed up?

NO, it's still buggy as fuck. The mod was packaged with 40d17 because.... well I don't know why.

d17 is NOT the 'new version', it is just another in the d series of graphical tweaks.  The only differences I am seeing between d17 and d16 are some of the menus and such.

d17 seems to run quite a bit faster on my old laptop as well.

Pretty much entirely so. Personally, I've never upgraded from plain old 40d, and I don't plan on it until the next full version comes out. Don't feel like dealing with the bugs and etc.

Not _entirely_.. It also adds some new functionality for display (resizing, png support, alpha), and some new input stuff.

In fact, I actually can't play 40d on my available machines worth a damn, due to keyboard problems. :D

Well, I didn't mean to dis it, specially since one of my main gripes is processort hogging.  I have d16 on my laptop and it has been very kind to me.  Not sure if I am ready to try d17, and really just kind of wish the new full version would come on out.  But yeah, screen sizing and etc were also good features.
