Uru is from like 2004 (although the graphics are epic for back then, and the art direction is immortally awesome). Your computer isn't going to have trouble with it.

Unfortunately I've still not got in- the download server seems to have been down or something. I'm reinstalling, which involves an hour long download.

The freeze issues I had before are gone, and it's now working perfectly for me.

...Whoa.  Okay, interesting.  I don't know if the other games post-Myst pre-Uru included this as part of their plot, but the central location in Uru is located...somewhere under the in-character New Mexico desert, in some ruins that were discovered in the 90's.  Cool.

EDIT:  Started poking through some old, old NPC storylines.  When the game takes place in the in-game-real-world in real time, you end up with the kind of mindscrews you normally only see in ARGs.  Like, "oh hey, I put some shirts for our organization up on cafepress", except that's actually an in-character statement by an NPC in addition to being real.  Whee!

Holy sh*t Batman.  Really?  Uru Live is....LIVE!?

I played all the way through Uru (and...whatever the exapansion was called) all the way to the very last, final puzzle....only to find it bugged and completable.  Shame I was running on walkthrough by then too; had it actually been live I could have been doing some of that stuff with other people.

(And I still don't understand their coordinate system; I mean, conceptually yes: angle, angle, distance, but I don't get how that works across linking books).

Heh, it's a puzzle in and of itself.

Anyway, I think there's plenty of related threads and guides.

And speaking of ARG mindscrews (yes, Cyan loves them) there used to be a D'ni on Google maps. I can't find it now though, but it was definetely there (maybe Google removes mindscrews from their maps).

They do.  You used to be able to get directions from [US city] to [British city] that involved taking a canoe across the Atlantic.  Later there was one that was the same, only from the continental 48 to Hawaii that involved swimming.

So yeah, they periodically update those.
