I just got my first noble ever...
« on: February 09, 2010, 03:55:36 pm »

...he had an accident...
I just want to know if there is anything bad about killing nobles, I know that the benifits will probly totally outweight the problems minor inconveniences, but does anything happen? I've heard that less migrants will come, but that's not such a big deal for me.

I think that is the only problem.

Dungeon master is the only noble really worth keeping, that guy is great.

The only other downside of killing a noble is his replacement might be EVEN WORSE!  But, with this attitude...

Then I'l just kill every. Noble. Ever.

I somehow don't think you are going to have a huge problem there.

Ditto JamPet's comments. The DM will be the first noble to arrive. S/he actually works, and gives you the ability to tame exotic animals.

Or instead of killing them you could just never appoint a Captain of the Guard. Without one, justice is never enforced, and nobles suffer an unhappy thought when one of their mandates is ignored and nobody's punished for that, but none of your dwarves are receiving essentially arbitrary hammerings and the rooms you give your nobles (because annoying purple smiley or not, don't tell me designing epic legendary quarters isn't fun) should more than make up for the mandate-related thoughts.

Which is of course not to say nobles aren't ideal candidates for weapons testing. Just make sure you isolate them early so they don't become friends with anyone who might pitch a fit when they inevitably bite it. And yeah, the DM is awesome.

Evidently, Dorf Philosopher Uristmedes only figured out the Uristmedes screw. And he ran around naked and covered in water, blood, and vomit all the time, so any discoveries made in his 4/7 bathtub went unnoticed by dorf science.

Keep the DM he is good to have. Others are good test subjects for balista effectiveness.

DM is useful, but his insistence that he can forge weapons and armour as well as anybody else is annoying, though easy to deal with. My personal favorite nobles are DM, Philosopher, and Mayor, since DM and Mayor work and Philosopher will be content to sleep in the dorms. Personally, though, I'm going to build my next fort with some attention to how to kill nobles, so I have methods available other than "lock door, starve". And also some attention to workshop logistics, stockpile setup, magma channeling, bedroom location, and food production.

The DM will live, everyone else gets to help me test new ways of killing captured elves.
