Hurray for Beer!
« on: February 09, 2010, 09:18:15 am »

I enjoy my hard whiskey, vodka, rum, scotch, tequila, and malt liquors, but there will be times when the hard stuff just wouldn't fit the moment. I am rather ignorant of the various types, flavors, and styles of beer. I know theres beer, ciders, ales, and lagers, and they comes in light and dark, served cold and warm, but I would like to know more about them, and more importantly, which ones are the best!

Also, feel free to talk about beer as you wish.

I'm usually a drinker of stout, but I have some St.-Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale. It is fantastic, it is a good beer to have with a meal (or without).

Though I can't legally drink, I enjoy lager or stout. A nice dark beer with rich flavor that goes down smooth. As for hard liquer, I enjoy whiskey, vodka, tequila, and schnapps. Can't buy it myself though, have to rely on other sources.

A couple days ago, I had a beer called Dale's Pale Ale.  40-proof beer, same as whiskey but it tastes like ale.  I've never been drunk on one glass of beer, but be damned if I didn't get close with that.

I hate lagers, and especially carbonated stuff.  I love all ales, and normally the darker the better.  Gimme a beer I can chew.

Lots of respect for stouts around here. Very Dwarven.

I can get a porter at my local liquor stores/pubs that is:
1) Opaquely black
2) 8.5%
3) The most badass beer ever

Occasionally, when I'm feeling less badass, an amber ale or honey lager hits the spot though.

Although my diet prohibts me from drinking beer ( D: ) I thouhg I'd not that cider isn't beer, cider is made from apples and is, incidentally, delicious.

Apple cider is made from apples.
Cider can be made from any fruit, if I remember correctly.

i like bitters - Pedegree / John Smiths
I like stout - Guiness, Murphys
I Like Ale - Tangle foots probs my favourite
Larger - has to be a hot day and a summery larger e.g. Corona, but Carling sucks.

Cider is alright if its farm scrumpy stuff, but its mostly a girly drink

Anyone here ever had mead?
It's fine stuff. It also comes in literally a shit-ton of flavours and kinds, like beer.
From really sweet pour-it-down-without-noticing-alcohol-next-day-AWFUL to kind beer-like.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to try a Sam Adams to kick things off, then sample some ales and lagers, then probably a Guinness.

Stouts sound interesting, along with meads. I probably won't know the difference between many of these until I try a few of each. I see so many people drinking Bud, Miller, and Natty without any real interest in what a good product is.

I've had a few apple cider drinks, it may not be beer, but it was worth mentioning. Dale's Pale Ale sounds very strong if it's an ale that's as potent as diluted whiskey. Drinks such as Tilt and Sparks taste great, and as far as I know they are malt liquors mixed with energy drinks, but I'm not completely sure. Corona didn't do it for me, but it's been a while since I've had one.

Any other suggestions/descriptions would be great!

Are you sure it's 40 proof? Because beer usualy doesn't go over 12% or 24 proof.

On that note, I'm quite fond of trapists, especialy La Trappe's, though a Rochefort's also soemthign you could wake me up for. Living in holland does help with stuff like that ;)

Sounds like you're from the states? I think most of my semi-local favourites don't make it that far. But you should be able to find Pilsner Urquell or Faxe around, so I'll recommend those. Two fine european exports. Both very hopsy. Also, Faxe sports a Dwarf Viking logo.

Corona didn't do it for me, but it's been a while since I've had one.

PROTIP : Corona is complete garbage without a lime, at which point it becomes slightly lime flavoured garbage.
