I use certain nicknames for characters based on their roles in the fortress.

Santa is a dwarf who only makes stone and wood toys for a living. He is also the only one with a custom profession; Giftmaker.

I nicknamed my axedwarf Butcher Pete for obvious reasons.

The two wrestlers are Wrasslor and Macho Man Randy Savage (Yes, it will fit)

Generally, my nicknames somehow tie in with their professions, and I only give the most important dwarves nicknames.

I gave my very first dwarves some pretty generic job-related names: Digman, Dirtbag, Woody, Stoneface, Chef Dave, Farmer Urist, and Book (manager). When I eventually started running out of names, I turned to relevant Pokemon (ie. Dugtrio, the third miner; Oddish the plant gatherer). But in my last fort I had a self-imposed rule about One Word Names Only, directly relevant to the job such as Axe for a woodcutter. Considering the fort was centered on a digging megaproject, I got a little scarce with the miners; spoilered are all their names (there's a LOT of them).

The only dwarf I broke the rule with was Cut-throat Bastard, the military leader. Exceptions are always fun.

I don't name my dwarves, I like the dwarven names just fine. Professions, however? The default professions are simply not dwarfy enough for my tastes.

Leatherworker? Pffft. Skinsmith!
Woodworker/bowyer/carpenter? Woodsmith. Not to be confused with the 'Treesmith' who works on the actual trees.
Farmer? Plantsmith.
My butcher and tanners tend to be combined too, in the Meatsmith profession.
The highest ranking military dwarf earns the title of Painsmith.
The first miner to breach the Tunnel of Fun is the new Insmith.

This had me laughing.

I'm kind of the same way, but not nearly so creative. I usually leave the names alone (a practice I'm going to change in the upcoming version) but the professions I'll sometimes come up with clarification like: MugMan or Armormaster/Apprentice.

I'm actually doing to be doing something new with the new release and designing my fortress after a Caste system that takes some ideas from http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=45684.0

Needless to say, Nobles will be among the Soapers. (the lowest caste)

Speaking of which, how is fire in the new version?
out of personal experience, where a dwarf was set alight by a magmaman, ran up 150 flights of stairs, and divebombed into the booze stockpile, I'd have to say fire is the same as always.

I just give my dwarfs random names, like Alex and Judy and Kento and stuff like that. Mostly I do this because it helps me actually figure out who is who when looking up a particular dwarf. All of the dwarfish names are really...ugh when it comes to that.

I only name the starting seven, to distinguish them from the faceless masses once the time comes to build them adamantine palaces on the moon. The only theme I could think of, that had exactly seven names, was the main cast of azumanga daioh. The leader is always Yukari, and the one who likes cats is Sakaki.

You better treat all those miners right.  If you piss them off they may just form some sort of faction and start setting rum-bombs off all over your fort.

I name the starting seven and there children. They get a unique name and the addition of "Founder" to their name, the children get the same treatment but they get "founder" with a lowercase f to make them distinct. also any dwarfs that do things of special not like a peasant killing a dragon get a name and special job title along with being put in the fast lane to being made legendary.

I actually had them carve out their own guild with an office for everyone plus a big office for the head miner. I love these guys. Worst of them is L49 in mining now, best is sixty-something, though that's not counting the deceased starting miners. I was good at avoiding cave-ins, but I had issues with pathing while removing an outdoor aquifer in the winter, so there's a few legendary dwarfsicles :(

Yeah, I always give them a theme.

Recent themes have included countries (Canada and USA were military Dwarves that liked to compete with each other. eg USA kills a dragon, so Canada smashes 50 goblins in a single siege with her mace) and Pokemon, whose military was divided into Water Squad, Fire Squad and Lightning Squad. Lightning Squad suffered heavy losses. Oh well, it's only Pikachu, right? ;)

i usually only name my main dwarfs (ie. legendary dwarfs, champions, evil nobles that will soon meet thier deat, etc) and i will usually just name them by their job for easy reference and location on the list of X number of dwarfs. for example, carpenter = "woody"  Mason = "Rocky"  Cook = "Ecoli"  Woodcutter = "Chuck"  Miner = "Peanuts"...and so on and so forth.  just remember, when you name them....it makes it that much harder to send them to thier inevitable death....  T_T

I mostly name my dwarves according to the time they arrived. My starting 7 get Founder+the profession they started at, the rest just get's waveX.

Only this time I made it different. All but one of my dwarves got killed, so I named her 'survivor', and the next migration wave got named 'rebuilder'. And i named my king 'Idiot' because i was so pissed of when he came...

I do that with the seven founders, to help me pick them out when giving them unique rooms. "One" tends to be the trader/leader.

Otherwise the only one I've ever nicknamed was a former mayor who got named "The Danger".

The only naming theme I've been doing was for my project. Every leader of the project (From originator to the last reclaiming leader) folows a Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger naming theme; provided they're associated with either technology or airships of any sort.

Of course, it's more a project-specific naming theme. Otherwise, I don't normally do it unless I have a special dwarf/team in mind.

I guess putting my name in for any philosophers applies quite well. No demands, everyone likes me, and I eat and drink and dance and sleep. Ah, the life of a dwarf philosopher. Never got a king yet, so can't put myself in that spot.
