Friendly Black-dragon Mega-beast
« on: February 08, 2010, 07:55:53 pm »

A black dragon arrived at my fortress.
My first reaction: Oh, carp.
Second: Must Capture It!
Third: Where'd it go?

I of course go to the units list and discover its friendly, and is the ruler of something (Legend look-up pending)
I lower the drawbridge and it doesn't charge or harm anything that goes near it. I then forget about it for around a season. Later on I get a goblin siege. I raise the drawbridge and set about opening the cat-attraction device. I then go to the units list and only see two out of around 10 goblins left. I go to where they spawned and see a bloody battlefield of goblin bones and corpses. Then I see the mound that causes my heart to drop.

Raw dragon scales bar
Smooth Rhyolite
Pool of Goo

I missed the battle and my pet black dragon died. D;
At least he took a lot with him.

Did the game give a name to this dragon?

I think it'd be better to just throw him in a pit.
By pit I mean "ledge designated as pit some 30 levels above the ground water magma" and that would,as they say be the end of that.
Unless a sword/axedwarf gets to 'em.. then it's rhesus pieces...

This would be dig deeper correct?

Did the dragon leave a corpse (that could be turned into meat, bones and skin) as well as the raw dragon scale? (I'm curious about that for a modding idea.)

Oddly enough, megabeast arrivals aren't flagged as "invaders" when they arrive. They're naturally hostile.

Except when they're members of civs. Being a member of a civ overrides the hostility of the megabeasts. So the game sees that there's a member of a civ on the map who isn't an invader or a merchant or a liaison, so it considers them a "Visitor" which is friendly.

I've had this happen before. As a note, it doesn't block other megabeasts from showing up. I've had two megas fight it out over the top of my fort before.

My  fortress thats going into its 5th year actually has had 2 black dragon encounters. The first time the dragon flew over my wall into some marksdwarves who I expected would be killed, a bolt  struck the dragon's heart and it died almost instantly. Second time around the dragon instead went through the front entrance and was captured, shortly after it was tamed and then placed at my Fortifications to spew fire at invaders.

My first LL/Dig Deeper megabeast was a hydra with no visible injuries.  It took 10 steps then suffocated.  Made me a nice Hydra and Dog biscuits (203) and a 200 bolt magazine for someones Xbow.

A year or two later a cyclops showed up, I drafted everyone who could hold a crossbow and decided to let it run through my wooden spike traps first after it instakilled a legendary miner.  Instead two of my champions run outside for no reason so I have to shut the spikes off.  I order them back into position but one of them just charges the cyclops.  First thing that happens is his sword gets stuck in the thing and then he wrestles it to death before my other champions get there from barely a screen away.

So does this feature allow for a megabeast to immigrant to your fortress.. I'm sorry but my fortress guard would love to have a Dragon as a squad member.

You can use Dwarf Companion to mod an arriving megabeast to become a member of your civilization, but Dwarf Fortress is a bit buggy with non-dwarf civ members.  I don't know if you can actually make them part of your military.

Is it normal to get mega beasts in general so often? I get one nearly every year now (playing dig deeper). Also I have a stupid noble who requests items made out of dragon hide and I only have one bar that's worth an insane amount! What method should I use to get rid of him?

Put his room at the very edge of the map and hope that a megabeast feeds on him.
