What exactly are wooden gauntlets? How would those even work?

They are made of a thick, flexible wood. It is overlayed and attached with copper hinges to allow movement.

EDIT: Oh, and I equip the spear. Do we know if any of this stuff is magical? I can make some assumptions, but you know.

I'll agree to that, I would rather smash someones head in then take a few more beatins to the head with no weapon with which to defend myself

Sounds cool to me. So Squeegy, I give Mission my Iron Hammer in exchange for his Copper Helmet. I check the helmet for lice and if it looks safe I strap it on.

Then I will sniff my potion somewhat to see if I can gather its use from its smell. Mind you I don't sniff it greatly, more like waft a bit of it towards me so I don't inhale pure poison.

Since Scripture is a skill, does that mean we start illiterate, or just barely literate? And language - I assume we can talk normally in the local language but if we take that skill we choose a new language?

Also, there isn't a melee weapon fighting skill. Did it get left off the list or does it work differently?

You cannot read. All melee weapons are their own Specialization skill. You can take a new language with the Language skill.
