Freshwater Lake Generating
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:37:07 pm »

I have genned more than 40 maps today. Only 5 had freshwater lakes with any size to them. I need an archipelago of freshwater lakes and islands, any tips on how I can do that effectively?

I recall drainage and rainfall being what you needed to fiddle with (more rain, less drainage = more lakes)

More rain, less drainage should help somewhat, though that may not affect the regional level lakes. More river sources also gives you more lakes, since lake region tiles are formed when streams and rivers go through lower-elevation areas AFAIK. For the same reason, high elevation variance should help, too. That should also make it more likely to have islands in freshwater lakes, which are normally uncommon.

In my experience, lakes usually appear near mountains, probably because that's where the bowl-like elevation structures appear most often, so lots of mountains should help, too. Unfortunately, lake-bound islands are still going to be uncommon, though, so... Good luck  :-\

Not sure what you're going for, specifically, but you might consider building a lake from a freshwater river/stream/source.

You won't get carp or hippos or anything, but it does work aesthetically.

Okay. Well, I will fiddle with it.

I am looking for an island in a bay on the world map in a freshwater lake. its not very easy. I am doing a bridge megaproject, and I am looking for good places to do it at.

Another thing to look for for bridges are "coves".  For my bridge MP, I used a 2x8 embark on the edge of an ocean that just had 2 tiles on each end connected to land.  I even was lucky and had a pipe! :)

I'd do that, but I don't think dwarves have words for "fair" or "logical".
