I hand Cript the fancy book.  I'll try a strength check on one of the locks, and a Search for hidden stashes/ caches, etc.

With the additional application of an acid splash spell, Urten manages to get the chest open. It contains 35 compartments in seven rows. Each contains a vial with a number on it. They are otherwise unmarked.

Haurach continues eatting vegetables. His mouth feels somewhat dry. He also tries to open the unopened chest, but is unable to do so. Not strong enough, it seems.

Urten cannot open the book to read it. It is locked.

Ulfgar will search through the pile of parchment he dumped on the table, looking for anything he thinks could be a listing for the vials, such as a numbered list.

If the rogue doesn't pick the lock to the other chest and no one else moves forward to try to open it, he will make an attempt.

Ulfgar finds a sheet which appears to be a numbered chart. He can't make out what it is listing, but it seems to be about the contents of the chest. There also seems to be a signature, written in Ignan calligraphy.

Eventually, Everpick gets around to trying to pick the locks. Afte a dozen or so tries, he manages to get the chest unlocked. It reveals a sack full of gems. He goes to work on the book's lock.

"Hey, necromancer. Those vials look important 'nuff to lug back to town? If'n so, this here chart 'ppears to tell what's in 'em. I can't make heads nor tales of it, though." Knowing that the mage saw something special about the gem chest, Ulfgar keeps away from it. Not knowing what gave off the signal could be dangerous. Instead, he does what should have been done a while back. He sits down with one of the roots that Haurach seems to enjoy so much and tries to determine what they are.

I nibble on another vegetable.  How many do we have?  Also I hand one to the dwarf.  "Want one? They're delicious!"

I will appraise each object in the room.

Ulfgar discovers that these vegetables are harmless, if unpleasant, food. They still taste like sawdust. There's about 45 left.

Criptfiend recognises the seal on the listing of vials as the seal of an obscure religious sect from the elemental plane of fire rumoured to hoard gemstones within their hidden temple. They must have sent these to the gem, possibly in exchange for the gems he stole.

Decipher Script allows Haurach to determine that there are 6 different labels on the vials. Their transliterations are:

Guntercaustin [8]
Mussilsplaten [5]
Archinsplaten [6]
Sachersplaten [6]
Gummensplaten [5]
Trifelsplaten [5]

You have no idea what these words mean. Presumably, they are all "Splaten" of some kind, except for "Guntercaustin" which isn't.
