Bump.

Ok, I did a scan with PC Wizard, and it says the GFX temperature is 120 degrees Celsius.

120 = 248 Farenheit.

WHAT THE HELL!? I didn't think the thing could even get that hot unless I put it under a direct flame! Everything else in the computer is around 50-60 celcius. Could this be the problem here?

Yep. That's it. That high a temperature causes problems. You very well may have wrecked the card, as that's above boiling.

The only problem with that statement is that what you are referring to is the boiling point of dihydrogen monoxide..
I'm reasonably certain it's safe to assume there's none of that in this system.
GPUs are meant to get hot.
That hot, it'll be throttling or even shutdown/bluescreen to prevent it getting any hotter, but it probably hasn't done any real damage yet.

Was this at idle or were you actually doing something at the time?
Idling temperatures of 60C for a CPU is still BAD.

This was just after the lagging started again on DF, at which point I downloaded PC wizard. After seeing that temperature, I turned my fan on the computer, left it alone for a few minutes, and then tried DF again. Right now, it's functioning normally.

While graphics cards can run pretty well at 80° C or similar, and a torture test on a heavy-duty one might get it up to 100° C and start thermal throttling to keep it there, 120° C seems rather high.

And yeah, while a load temperature of 60° C for a CPU wouldn't be too bad, idle temperatures that high are worrying.

Yep. Looks like an overheating problem.

How is the ventilation in the room? What is the room's normal background temperature?
Are all the fans within your computer running?
Is your graphics card passive cooled (just a heatsink) or active cooled (a heatsink and fan) ?

It's also not terribly far from the melting point of tin-lead solder, and many of the materials used in chip construction can start to expand around that temperature, which can cause intermittent signal failure.

My room is pretty well ventilated. Back last year, it became sweltering hot in my room in the summer, but I kept a constant eye on my computer's temperature and turned the fan on it when it became too hot. This winter, however, things haven't been that hot until only a few days ago, and I didn't really consider anything I did to be enough to raise the computer's temperature.

I'm not certain that anything in the computer chip itself has begun to expand. Again, this crap didn't appear until now only a month ago, and the hottest this computer got was back in June. could it have really taken 7 months before anything noticeable occurred?

It's actively cooled, by the way. Blagh, and right as I finish this post, it does the slowdown on me again. The fan goes back on.

You will not be able to actually see any head damage to the chip sadly.

I do not know if Vista has this (Windows 7 does, windows XP does not. I skipped Vista)

press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, go to the performance tab, and press "resource monitor" on the bottom. It should be an obvious button. If it is not there Vista does not have it.

If Vista does have it you can see some good realtime info on your system performance. Try it while idling, while playing, and look at what it looks like when your comp gets too hot. Anything seem to pop out?

If you do not have it, then we will have to take another approach.

Wait, so you don't have your case fans powered normally?

I think he means room fans. Computer fans should work all the time or the damage WILL happen. I had a broken GFX fan I didn't notice and I've got a major damage to my video card processor.

Yes, I did mean room fan. It does a good job of cooling the computer down. and Yes, Vista has the resource monitor. The only thing I see that stands out is that DF uses a LOT of computer processing power. The game went back to normal, BTW. I'm thinking it IS a temperature thing. I'll run a few more tests with TF2 *Another perpetrator of this slowdown issue* before coming up with anything conclusive.

DF is supposed to use a lot of processing power. Unless your FPS limit is really low it will entirely max out one of your processors (or 50% each) this is entirely normal and not harmful.

Heat can be very harmful however...

Wow, that's insanely hot.  So...

Location of PC
Is it in a cabinet?
Is it sitting on carpet?
How far from the wall is the back of the system?
Have you dusted out the guts of the system?
How well do the fans spin?  If you rotate the fan does it spin well or do they feel gritty or gunked up?  Please check the PSU fan, the GPU fan (if there is one) and the CPU fan.  Does the case have any other fans?  Who installed them?
What brand of PC was it again?
Any custom work on the hardware?
Is there any overclocking software installed?  Has there EVER been any overclocking software installed?

Feel free to take a pic of where the PC sits and post it.  And the insides.
