He's using ~750MB of RAM in his graphics card too, integrated as it is.  If I'm reading the dxdiag properly.  I would suggest decreasing amount used, usually set in the BIOS.

Another thing you may need to try is RAMtest, which boots itself and does a hardware test on your ram itself. Most mass-market computers use cheap ram sticks that have above-average failure rates, the (erratic) symptoms of which sometimes match yours.

Hmmmm... though It is a possibility, I do not think faulty RAM is his issue. Faulty RAM has, in my experience, usually been the cause of BSOD's rather than slowdowns. I may very well be wrong, so go ahead and test.

Nope. He has a non-integrated NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS, with its own 1gb of RAM.

Yes, I run Firefox. It and Dwarf FOrtress are the only programs running over 100K. I force shutdown Firefox since sometimes the cache doesn't always clear up, and I do this when it reaches around 250K. I once had it go over 750K, and I'm still trying to find out why Firefox has this huge issue.

Firefox just has that issue, nothing you can do about it really.

Google Chrome does not have such an issue. I highly recommend it. Chrome is very resource efficient, and multi threaded. Chrome recently got the ability to have addons too, so you don't have to lose Adblock Plus or other addons when you switch over :)

If you prefer to keep Firefox for some reason, maybe try cutting back on the addons. Too many addons can very easily jack up your memory usage quickly.

Are you sure, because..

Display Memory: 1010 MB
 Dedicated Memory: 243 MB
    Shared Memory: 767 MB

That to me means that 256MB is dedicated, the rest is shared.

Would an increased page file help things?

That's not his SYSTEM memory. That's them memory on the card itself.

Just checked with my home PC and I have been reading it wrong - whoops.

Although display memory seems to be half of the total system memory (going by his dxdiag and the one I did on my own PC).

But I still think an increased page file might help.

Or the Window's Update that started it may be the culprit (which one was it)?

That's just a coincidence.

Yes. I think I may have heard that your page file should be twice your RAM. So, try setting it to 4gb.

Okay broseph, I'll take a crack at it, but first I need some info.  I'm feeling you've got malware / virus or an overheating PC.  Let's get some facts first.

Is this a new problem?  (last 2 weeks right?)
Has this happened before?
Are all of your fans spinning?
Where is your computer located?  Is it in a cabinet or on a shelf?

If you can't open you case to check your fans you can download and install PC Wizard from CPUID.  Depending on the computer you can see heat levels, fan speeds and about everything else.  This program can also print all data to a text file so we can help you better.  Oh, and it's freakin sweet.

Did you run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware yet?

Yes I did, and thank Armok the problem has been solved. I only had a few issues with the internet, but the connection  has been shitty all morning, so I'm not worried about that. Thanks everyone for your help.

May I ask what solved the problem, for future use?

I'm curious to know what you did to solve this as I am having the same problem.

With a fort of 100 dwarves, I can get a siege and run around 60-80 fps. Sometimes, for what seems to be no reason (when there is no siege and 40+ idle dwarves), I can drop down 2-3 fps. I looked at my pagefile but it seems to be using around 800M max and 3-4G available. Heres my dxdiag if anyone has any thoughts.

Could very well be something to do with a choke point - dwarves getting stuck in too small a path.  I've had that happen to me and it clears up once they find another way/stop going through there.  Never to such a low fps though...hardware looks to be fine.

Since you have a laptop, it may be an overheating issue.

However, like GutsyTurtle, I think your issue may lie within the game.
Maybe show us a DFMA map of your place :)

Go to your task manager and look for a process called "uphclean.exe." It's not malware, it's a microsoft program that some windows updates installs, so a spyware scan won't detect it. On my systems, it tends to grab a lot of CPU.

Dammit dammit DAMMIT! It's not fixed. The slowdowns are coming back again. I don't know how I got rid of them in the first place, nor do I know how they came back, but I noticed they came back after I put my USB in. This more or less confirms that the problem came from my school, since the USB is used exclusively for school-related stuff I can't email to myself (Since the school's blockers can block the email systems as well).
