Unexplainable game/system slowdown (Resolved)
« on: February 06, 2010, 02:42:16 pm »

I've had this problem for almost 2 weeks now. It's not only this game, but any game that was programmed in C++. When I first starts the game, it will run smooth as giant cave spider silk, but after a few minutes, it will begin to chug. BIG TIME. What's normally at an optimum whatever the max FPS on this game is, the game will dissolve down to 1/8 of a frame per second. It will take up to 8 seconds to refresh one frame. I have been scouring the internet for any kind of response as to what this problem may be, and I've not received any conclusive answer from anyone. I'm using the most recent version of Dwarf Fortress, and yes, this computer can more than handle it.

It's not only this game, but any game that was programmed in C++.

Also, this is the Dwarf Fortress Discussion board, not GD. Not like it really matters too much.

Firstly, some basic information: have you made any hardware changes prior to the problem starting?

Only a windows update. It happened when I was at school. When I got back, it was in the process of an eternal BSOD cycle (fucking vista)and was currently  I did extensive scans with AVG, and it turns out I got trojans from my college's computers (transferred through my USB drive) that were causing the blue-screens. Since I did a system purge and defragged the drives, I haven't had any bluescreens or any of that bullshit, but the problem is still there. I'm losing my mind just trying to find a solution.

And no, seriously, I do have the hardware to run this game. I have managed to run the game on a 8x16 region with 400 animals and 120 dwarves running around no problem. WITH VISTA.

Whether or not it's in C++ shouldn't really matter, it is all turned into binary encoded assembly.

I've done that, and I never had any problems (besides the obligatory 10 minute seasonal save). Once it was loaded it ran like normal. It was just when you tried put stuff on or get stuff off the drive that it was any slower (obviously).

Thats how I usually run DF, and it doesn't impact my FPs at all. Only my save speed (though that goes from 20seconds to 1 minute, not to 10 minutes o.O)

10 minutes being a slight exaggeration on my part...after spending however many hours engrossed in DF, it feels like ages :D.

It does that to me, and I've never tried running DF from anything other than my HD...

Feel like ages, that is, not take 10 minutes.

It sounds to me like you have some other incredibly buggy program, or a fucked up registry.

You wouldn't happen to have "Tea Timer" would you?

Not sure weather you are implying that Spybot's Tea Timer is A: buggy, or B: somthing that would screw up your registry. A is wrong, and B is very wrong. Tea Timer STOPS stuff screwing up your registry.

If you want to check if its your registry, CCleaner can help. Doesn't sound like a registry problem to me though, more like a too-many-background-programs problem.

Stop blaming Vista for everything.
You, first of all, directly contradicted yourself there.
Not to mention the fact that Vista hasn't had anything wrong with it since SP1.
This sounds like overheating to me.
All that power cycling probably killed the thermal paste on your CPU.
Get a program like RealTemp and check your CPU temps.

Is this a desktop or a laptop?

I think he was blaming the BSOD's on the trojans and blaming vista for letting the BSOD's cycle the system on and off. Don't flame the poor guy.

Also, no version of windows ever, including Vista SP1 and W7, and no version into the future, ever have had nothing wrong with them.

I cut the quote down to that specific instance for the direct contradiction aspect.
That's not the only place he blamed Vista.

And clearly, no, it's not perfect, but it doesn't have any major problems in terms of system speed or stability anymore.
