You can repair the busted laser turrets with a repair unit, which is a battery + computer chip. You can break down the robot wreckage from the dead taser bots in the Missile Base area for batteries.

For the Hive area, bring a turret or 3 with you. I forget the key to pick them up, but you can, though you move slower with one in your hands, though if you don't deploy them they don't slow you. Regardless, drop em on the north edge, travel into the hive, and if you see ANYTHING come at you, retreat back to the safety of the turrets on the other map. Repeat until its clear, then set up a leapfrog game with the rest to leapfrog through it.

Androids seriously have it easiest, especially if Missile Base is one of the three next to the start. Battery farming can keep them going forever, even if you use a laser pistol a ton. For the humans, doing the Missile base for turrets then deploying them all in the hive can net you a massive amount of food. Remember that Humans can't use batteries anyway, so might as well make them repair units. DONT make repair units before you need them, and break any you find, since the damn things are a weapon of sorts and are one shot and wasted.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I tried to make a mad dash to get pass the hive into the next area, be it mining area or ship graveyard.

Seems the map is randomly generated when you first enter it, this time I no longer get jumped by a huge swamp right at the edge. But I only made it past a bridge over lava and then a bit more... then I got discovered. They ran faster than I do...

Looks like this map setup is beyond my current skill... as I human I need the ship graveyard and missile base right away...

Odd, the missile base is usually spawned on your side of the Hive.

In any case, I suggest you attempt to create a bio-scanner, though finding a biomass detector is fairly difficult. That should make Hive runs much easier.

What items are useful to the alien? I don't know what all they can/cannot use.

Alien cannot use guns and armor... but you can still create turrets. Stasis fields and generators are always useful. Modded subspace radio is not usable (no slot for it).

The mining fields are a real gold mine, so far I've found...
Computer chips
Metal rods
Glass tubes
Bullets
Ether
Fuel cells
Fuel converters
Goggles
I also found a tazer, flamethrower and pistol on the guards.

Are you using a netbook or something? The game defaults to a 1024 x 768 resolution, so if you can't run that, then a top-down survivor you are not.

It could be your ATI GFX card, the game might not be able to recognize your hardware; in which case you can't really do anything about it.

There's a Setup.exe in Notrium's directory, you can select another resolution/windowed mode there.

Edit: I started a new alien game... this one goes a lot smoother. Eden to the east (no point going there), Ship graveyard to the west (regenerating aliens and marines means lots of free food, health packs, turrets and other items), Mining area to the north (marines I could kill with min. damage taken or dodge), then the Hive.

I already got the escape pod working, now I only need to disable the missile base. Kinda stuck on my evolution though, can't find enough small blue aliens in the hive. Their spawn point seems to be pretty close to lava, and thus the small ones kill themselves rather quickly, leaving only the normal blue ones for me.

Does anyone have a list of alien evolution requirements and the abilities gained?

I found the data in scripts.data, but I don't know how to trace those condition parameters. I can only tell condition parameter 10 is the evolution point meter.

50=Weak night vision
100=Medium night vision
150-250=Strong night-vision. Acid spit. Motion Sensing Near
350-450=Lethal bite, Motion sense Close
550-650=Feral rage, Motion sensing Medium
750-850=Devour
950=Motion sensing Far
1100=Lay eggs, Make nests, Motion sensing Very far

It's been a while since I played alien, so this is probably a bit off or out of date.

that's been my problem as well, not able to find enough of the small blue aliens to evolve. I have killed the larger ones in droves.

Yeah, after you butcher all the blues in the starting area you'll be pretty much SOL. As soon as you go to the hive you're getting bisected by 90% invisible stalking aliens.

So how do people generally get past the 150 mark? I have yet to find enough small blues in and around the starter area. As you said, if I got to the hive I am beset on all sides by half visible aliens and then die pretty quickly if I don't run like mad.

I have seen new aliens appear in the starting area and duel with tazer tanks and marines, I don't know where they keep coming from though. If you wait a week or so you might see them on occasion.

Hell, even if you are an alien you probably won't run fast enough to survive the alien attack from the near invisible ones.
