You waffle back and forth between sticking your burned hand in the acid again, or diving into the water monster, or not doing any of those things.

Man, adventuring sure is hard work!

You savescum.

You are near the turtle fountain. Water courses out of the turtle's grinning snapper and falls into the pool below. There is an unholy accumulation of debris here. To the East there is a large carving on the wall, at the center is a circular depression with a square stone peg sticking out. To the West is the Shattered Altar.

You write of your adventures on the walls near the turtle fountain. Surely, should you perish here, other brave souls will learn from your many hilarious mistakes.

That done, you decide you're kind of sleepy, and make a little nest out of the wood debris. You drift off to sleep with some difficulty.

Your sleep is uncomfortable. You dream that you're wandering from room to room of your boyhood house. Everything is empty. There are shadows on the walls where your furniture used to be. On the front porch is a small, worn leather suitcase. There is nobody else around.

You wander out to the back yard, to your tree fort. It's wet and dim, and the chill wind drops a few spatters of rain and a wet leaf on your upturned face. The crooked board ladder going up the tree looks unsturdy, and the fort itself is more ramshackle than you remember.

A bit of light catches your eye. There's a weird hole in the tree and light comes from it. And there's another one farther down where you have to stoop to see into it. You peer into first one and then the other.

As you shake your groggy head and rise to wakefulness, you begin to forget the dream. But you remember that behind one of the weird holes was something wonderful yet incredibly frightening. Behind the other was a long row of grim, chalk-white faces and nothing else.

You don't remember which was which.

Now fully awake, you take a pee in the corner, drink your fill from the fountain, and gobble down one of the cooked snake meats from the floor. Your lantern is now at 50% oil.

You feel fully rested and not at all sleepy.

Your right hand is badly burned.

We burned the mold away right?
If so we should go explore that room.  Be sure to wear a water-soaked rag as a mask.  Bring water with us.  Just in case.  Brandish a lit torch.

You soak your face-mask in water and put it back on, then go upstairs, past the entrance, to the room marked "Mold".

There is a stone archway leading into a large open room. There's a short ramp leading in, so the room is slightly elevated above the floor level.

Inside you see ancient wood wine-rack style diamond pattern cubbies set into the walls. There are things stuck in many of them. There are also stone tables toward the middle of the room, but you can't see all the way in with the light you have. The stone tables are slabs set upon blocks. There are padded benches here and there.

The main thing about the room is that everything in it beyond the very entrance is covered by a hideous yellow mold. You can see the filaments waving in the air. The room looks very dusty but it smells absolutely delicious. Like fruit and beer and honey and cloves.

The mold immediately in front of the doorway is blackened and curled up like peeling paint. Your torch stub is in the middle of the burned ring. No new mold has grown there since.
