You light the end of your rope on fire and dip it in the liquid, asking what it is out loud. The flame goes out. The liquid around the rope begins bubbling and giving off acrid smoke. You withdraw the rope and notice that there is no burned section anymore, and the end of the rope continues to sizzle and bubble for a little while.

You limp back to the black fountain and grab a handful of the stuff, bring it back to the pillar room, and plop it into the pool. It floats on the surface, sizzling and boiling away, and breaks up into little globs. They float down into the pool and disperse.

Your hand feels funny. A little swollen and stinging, like you leaned on it and it fell asleep.
