1x1 fortress size
« on: May 19, 2008, 02:33:00 pm »

Being able to make the smallest possible fortress seems like a quick and simple adjustment. It would help those of us with older computers, those who want an ultra-compact fortress and offer an interesting challenge.

There doesn't seem to be any programming difficulties stopping this - wagon placement and checking for suitable environment is already done and no map features encompass all the square (i.e. there is enough rock around a lava pool for a wagon).

PS Does anyone know why sand beaches can't be the only land part of your fortress (2x2 square, 1 beach tile, 3 ocean)? Because they are defined as part of ocean biome? They look like an awesome place for challenging hydroengeineering.

Hm. 1x1 sounds an interesting challenge; you'll probably want to tone down the number of dwarves too, right?

[I'm not sure if Goblin sieges are smaller if you lower the population limit ... though with lots of traps I guess you'd make it.]

Beaches: I've been able to start fairly interesting fortresses (1) on beaches - you need some land tiles though. The beaches themselves AFAIK have no trees (driftwood is unusable), usually an aquifer, and no soil - pretty much a death sentence. If your location has at least one "land" tile, you should be good to go though. How about 2x1?  :)

(1) I became bored and gave up when I realized there are never any invaders on an ocean island ...

Nope. Sieges start at 80 dwarves and get bigger, independent of exact number.

The challenge part would actually be pretty simple (hint: bring lots of wood), anyway, that's a topic for fortress mode discussion, not suggestions. And 2x1 is impossible, that's the suggestion: please allow to resize any dimension of local area map on embark below 2. Two is absolute minimum now.

Sieges may require 80 dwarves, but ambushes...

There's nothing to stop your 20-dwarf fortress from getting 8 or even more ambush groups all at the same time.  This is pretty much the same number of goblins you'd get in a siege, only they appear stealthed and without warning.

If ignorance is bliss, why are my dwarves all tantruming?

I think the problem with 1x1 size forts is that the place's length wouldn't fill the horizontal area of your screen, leading to some problems.

Lies, I experienced a siege of around 7 goblins with 7 dwarves in my fortress. It said "*SIEGE*" in the corner, so I'm pretty sure it was a siege.

Other than the not being able to fit the screen, a 1x1 would be pretty interesting.

Oh. Me brain bad  :(. Standard viewing area is indeed 80x25 and 1x1 fortress would be 48x48. Suggestion shelved until after presentation arc (Core51) is implemented. Sorry.
