Indeed, mods are the reasons several people stick to the original and not to Warband, there are some great mods for the original that due to their complexity and lack of devs willing to spend insane amount of time trying to convert every of their scripts, will never get ported to Warband.

But if disregarding the mods, in term of vanilla game, i don't see why one would want to stick to the original (out of not having bought Warband of course), Warband is superior, more features, more factions, just more.

I think the mouse swinging mechanic was changed (or maybe just defaults to a different option?), in M&B I believe you had to walk in the direction you wanted to swing, and now it depends on which way you drag your mouse. Took a bit getting used to it but now it's all cool runnings.

Nah, mouse-controlled swinging has been in M&B since the very start.

Clearly you've never heard of The Last Days mod, it's quite brilliant, if I could say so.

I have heard of it, chiefly because everyone mentions it whenever there's a discussion about M&B and WB. Thing is, that's just one mod. Even if it's absolutely amazing, I doubt it's worth getting the game just for that when WB has dozens of other excellent mods available.

So... I got lucky in coming to a siege a little late and I clubbed Jarl Faarn over the head and took him prisoner. The only thing is, what do I do with him now? No ransom broker will buy him, the Nord lords don't acknowledge that I'm dragging him up to them going 'take this guy off my hands, ffs,' and I can't seem to recruit him. I've had him for about a week or two now and he hasn't escaped either. King Ragnar won't take him back.

I'm starting to think this dude's pretty worthless and they don't want him back at all. XD

Just keep on waiting. Eventually the offer for ransom will come through. It can take a long time until you get the offer. Mind you, if he's been loitering around the camp for a year, then you should probably just release him (or keep him to hamper the Nord war effort. It's up to you).

Look for his family?
I remember that you'll eventually get a message from a family member to pay for his ransom... another matter if the fellow does not have family I suspect...

You just gotta keep hold of the bugger till they get their act together or something of the likes. (I usually just free em to take the relation bonus.)

Yeah, relation bonus > ransom. When you start up your own kingdom and begin recruiting lords, having high relations with as many of them as you can really helps. You'll need to convert as many as quickly as you can to avoid being instantly obliterated by the other powers.
(this is assuming you're playing Diplomacy, I haven't played vanilla WB in years, not sure how it works in that)

I would just to get him out of the way so I can capture people I can actually sell. I don't feel like sinking another point into prisoner management when there's other stuff I need more. The only problem is I can't get rid of him. I can release other prisoners just fine but for him it's always grayed out. :-\

Talk to him, you should have the dialog option to release him.
Also, I think "disband" in case of regular prisoners means "execute" rather than "release". ;)

Look up who the Nords are currently warring with And go ask their enemies for quests.
With a bit of luck someone will ask you to capture a Nord lord for him.
And since you have a lord stinking up your prisoner slots you can immediately complete the quest.

Gamersgate has the entire Mount & Blade collection on sale today.  Warband is $4.99, if anyone is interested.

I just figured it was easier to just get all of your followers and turn them into lords (yes, even the commoner ones). That way, you get strong custom lords and the peasant lords who can only use small parties will obliterate any bandits they find, so caravans don't get hit quite as often. Even better if you specialise them in whatever it was that helped movement speed, its been like, a year since i played.

Ah, then I guess that's a Diplomacy feature. Isn't Diplomacy compatible with Vanilla saves, though? I recall something to that effect. You should look into that.

I prefer to keep all 16 in my party (high persuasion FTW), both for their party skills and also because they make excellent soldiers once properly trained and equipped. That's a slow and expensive process, but I learned the danger of such non-mook characters when three enemy lords with heavy armor and two handed swords killed something like two dozen of my knights (granted, that was in the meat grinder at the top of the siege ladder, but still). I thought to myself, I want a bunch of dudes like that! There are plenty of lords to recruit all over the place but only a few companions. It just seems wasteful to turn the latter into the former.

With a bit of work companions are always the best fighters/snipers.
250 crossbow skill + best armor and crossbow in game makes bunduk a murder machine.
