That WWII China mod sounds really cool (I just hope the spelling is better in mod than the author's description would suggest), but all the official downloads I can find seem to be expired.  Or at least the links in the official thread, and every other mention I find just links to there.  Anyone know where it can still be downloaded?

I've been learning a lot about Native in the last couple of days, which is unexpected considering I've played 100 in-game days recently, but 550+ in-game days over-all.

Anyway, Vaegir Marksmen really do seem to be the top of the line archers. Between their mail armor, two-handed weapons, and fast-firing bows, they're pretty lethal and resilient on and off the field. That being said, I'm fighting the Rhodok and Swadians right now and, I'm not sure if it's just my game, but they're marshaling twice the troops my much larger Nord empire can. Recently I fought a battle of 1547 vs 900ish, which was fucking awful. Through some tactical maneuvering I was able to largely defeat them, but I took a couple of crossbow bolts near the end and they took me prisoner and retreated at 200. So I blunted the force but ultimately lost.

I hit a Rhodok Sergeant for 66 and he continued to run around like nothing happened. That's... pretty fucking beefy, paired with the glaives they use to great effect. Ultimately, Rhodoks are second rate because the auto-calc seems to think "No mounted units? You're fucked" and give me some wicked rolls when I send my troops in without myself (mainly when they're out-numbered, but the difference is significant). I've gained a new respect for their ability to take and dish damage though, Swadians too. Crossbows are no joke, though a faster firing unit will always beat a crossbow unit given no interference or head shots.

Nothing compares to Heroes, Huscarls, and Marskmen, though. Nothing, even Khergit. Run around all you want, but if you can't pierce the armor you're useless, and my heroes will get you eventually.

Anyone else find the Fighting Pick to be the best melee weapon in the game?

It's not even funny, is it?  I ceased to fear Huskarls and really anything after getting a heavy pick.  It just annihilates everyone.  I found a spiked club in another game that works about as well (maybe better, I forget), but the pick looks a lot nicer.

Told ya Huscarls and Marksmen are the kewlest  ;D

I've never used the fighting pick myself, but i imagine it to be only truly effective agaisnt armor.  (every weapon has different Armor piecing capabilities paired with thier damage Maces: low damage, high AP Swords: High damage, low AP Axes: High damage, Med AP Spears: Medium damage, Variable AP) I've been KO'd by Swadian infantry using them before i think, Tore right through my Plate Mail  :'(

The spiked club is close, because it has like 21 piercing damage, and that fucking surprised me the first time I really recognized it for what it was. But the fighting pick (and similar military pick) are faster, longer, and deal more piercing damage. It's just ridiculous. 28 piercing damage, *WHAM* 75 damage to the head with 11% speed modifier. WTF? That's like better than some two-handed weapon damage I get with much higher speed modifiers. It's all about the damage type, apparently.

Before I was running around with a balanced bastard sword, thinking it's superior speed, length, and cutting damage were... superior.

Nope. Fighting pick. 29 piercing is all you need, as long as it's not a spear or an arrow (for some reason).

I hear you. Swadian infantry using picks and spears, and rhodoks using spears, have surprised me. At close range I'll get KO'd for 20 damage by a Rhodok spearmen, and think, "What?" This in full plate.

Try the fighting pick. It's ridiculous. If you take one step while you swing it often goes right through almost any armor. Even units without armor take obscene damage. Consider I went from a 45ish cutting damage weapon, unable to take out more than light armored foes 2-3 at a time, to a 29 piercing damage weapon capable of taking down 6-8 foes in ANY armor.

Just a tidbit I thought of after that.  I know there's bucketloads of M&B mods obsessed with more properly representing "realistic" combat (whatever the particular nerd writing it thinks that means).  The reason pick-like weapons are so rare in real history is that M&B can't emulate the very real problem of getting your weapon stuck in the target.  Without that hindrance, there's really no reason not to use picks.

Chalk another one up for Dwarf Fortress.

This video, at the very end (last 20 or 30 seconds) exemplifies the problem with the pick.

From what I've heard, the Mamelukes or some other middle eastern Medieval army employed soldiers with heavy armor and huge picks, who were escorted by lightly armored, sword-bearing troops that protected them while they removed their huge picks from their victims. =P

The most lethal weapon in the game is that small one-handed hatchety looking waraxe. It only does like 34-ish damage but the thing is that you can wield it with a huge ass shield and the axe gets bonus against enemy shields. So with enough power attack it doesn't matter if they block, you just slice through shields and armor with incredible speed (the tiny axe requires almost no backswing).

I would just like to say that I despise the Tournaments.  Or at least the "weapon combination" random selection.  Played the same Tourney like six times in a row.  Died every time, I got shafted by getting arrows (with no sword) because I had crap archery skill.  Since I was playing the China mod, I thought using bows would be ridiculous.  Turns out the mod makers never got around to making all parts of the game world respect the whole "guns" thing.

I've been reading the Steam Phisher thread too much to trust a page that just asks me to put in my game key... :-\

You must take immediate action and verify your identity by downloading the beta or your key will be suspended!

Although it is sort of ass they don't even use https when passing information like that.
