First off all, fight while running backwards always.  You won't get surrounded and some of the enemies will fall behind as they swing and miss or get caught on their allies.

Not really the best idea. you swing slower when backing up, yes you want to backpedal but stop to swing. a shield and waiting for openings will help too.

Ah. Enjoy the awesome mods and the awful animations :P

Be sure to check out 1866, Solid & Shade and Europe 1805.

The animations difference is shocking a bit when you're so used to the Warband one, but it's servicable (funny i find the jump animation actually more believable than the Warband one)

What annoy me with that M&B is that i'm forced to play fullscreen, as unlike in Warband in which it happened only rarely the windowed mode seems to lose focus constantly and when you fight and the window suddenly change to your browser every few sword strokes or whatever else you have opened, it's not really fun.

Will check the mods when i'll have more time, there's a bunch available there.

edit : oh wow 1866 fo M&B is awesome, so much better in every ways than the Warband 1860 mod i gave a try half a year ago.

So while the GoG thing is free, for those of you who have played it, what are the best mods for the original M&B? I never played it, I was late to the boat. It was only until Warband was nearly released that I realized that M&B wasn't an MMO of some kind. That might be funny to you but back then their website was pretty bare bones and the way they pitched their game kind of gave it the impression of an MMO, at least to me.

EDIT: Also, I don't know if anybody has posted this, but there's a new trailer for Viking Conquest. I'm surprised at how smooth the ship movement (and the characters standing on said ships) are, with waves and everything. If they can achieve this sort of stuff with the current engine I can't wait to see what M&B2 mods will be like.

My favorite mod for the original M&B (and the reason why I still play it every now and again) is Star Wars Conquest. It's an awesome total conversion mod.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!

Yeah, sadly the 1860's mod is a bit lacking code-wise and asset-wise, plus it's basically WAR: 1860's Edition. 1866 is essentially a classic western experience. In fact, one thing I love about it is how role-playable it is.

SWC is a bit similar in that respect, but for various reasons, not the least of which being my relative ignorance about SW universe, I never really got into that.

Solid and Shade is the most deceptive in its changes, since it uses Vanilla map, lords and the like, and you could go through most of the game as usual, except with inexplicably eerie ambience. But underneath it, the mod is MASSIVE.

So much to play with, so little time !

i'm already hooked on 1866 (just this one was worth getting that free M&B1 ) and there are lots more non-Warband mods i regularly read about how good they are, it looks like i'm going to spend a lot of time unproductively in the coming months :D

One thing that I find rather disappointing is I don't think I've come across a mod for Warband that has the same level of custom content beyond armour and character models that 1866 has. Like, 1866 has banks, bounty hunting, gang bases in towns and so on whereas something like "Warsword: Conquest" or "Gekokujo", while both nice model wise, don't have anything really unique to them beyond that.

Have you tried Floris?

It doesn't exactly have a fuckhueg amount of extra stuff, but everything present is just generally better and more immersive, and it includes the essentials like Diplomacy and Freelancer to boot.
The only real failing I find in it is that it's not actively updated unfortunately, but its still my go-to setup and what I compare every other mod to.

I recommend The Last Days mod for original M&B, and to use Ron's Realistic Combat Mod with it (RCM for short). It is set in a Tolkien universe where Frodo failed to destroy the ring.

I can't remember which mods stopped at .808 and which made it to the final version anymore or I could suggest more.

Funny when Viking Conquest DLC - a mod-you-must-pay-for from Brutenwalda people - costs more than Warband. I'm a little torn whether I want to buy it or not. Brutalwalda is awesome so I don doubt their quality. However, there are so many awesome free mods that supporting the commercialisation of modding doesn't seem fair.

I gave a try to the star wars mod on that free M&B1, it looks like the "0.9.4 release candidate" version on their moddb page :
http://www.moddb.com/mods/swconquest
just crash during loading, not even reaching the main menu, not sure if it's a gog version specific or not, but from what i read on the gog boards it appears that the gog version isn't the latest version of M&B1 (the latest being called "enhanced edition" on talesworld ) but the version from before it, probably going to conflict with mods made for the "enhanced" thing.

The version "0.9.3" of the star war mod from here :
http://www.mbrepository.com/file.php?id=809
(or from the nexus alt mirror) work without a problem with the gog version
