Ah yeah, Brytenwalda...

I thought it looked amazing, with so much potential. I tried to overlook the really horrible English, but I simply couldn't. It was so freaking terrible that it completely jarred me out of the experience every 5 minutes.

The equivalent would be like watching Inception, except there are hardcoded subtitles written in txtsp33k.

Brytenwalda has it's interesting parts but it's still very flawed.

I love the setting and the size of the world was good.
However the crappy english, the combat and the way the game handels the different tribes/clans/kingdoms really bugged me.

The combat tried to use dark ages weaponry which really didn't work for me. A large chunk of the army was made up of polearms and shields which the AI had no idea what so ever how to control. The AI would attempt to "hug" you with the polearms and they'd do no damage leaving you to carve them up with what ever.
I found the game pretty easy if you go the Irish who are defended from most of the invading clans and have (i believe) the best horsemen.

The way the clans worked was an abomination. I enjoyed the way the kingdoms were sperated into clans that would always be fighting amonst themselves. however, Unless you study the history you had no idea which clan belonged to which kingdom.
The travel map could have fixed that by having borders drawn on the map that clearly showed "Pictland", "Ireland" or what ever. They didn't even try to make the kingdoms the same colour either. So you're thrown into this multicoloured haze of different clans battling it out not knowing for certain if the next village will have your troops or if you're attacking your own kingdom.

The game did allow for a lot of great roleplaying. I found myself uniting Ireland under a single king to keep the country from being taken over. I found myself playing a Welsh bandit pillaging and attempting to convert people to paganism.

In short a terrific concept left down by some terrible decisions by the developers.

Err, explain? Did you mod in boars as mounts? (In which case, it looks very good).

And pig underwear.

All the models were from Bryenwalda which I threw into native for some giggles.
Set the charge to 100 and the speed to about 50 and I'm running down troops like they were blades of grass.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, or if its been asked and answered before, but is Mount and Blade Warband playable on its own without the original, vanilla Mount and Blade?  Or do I need to also buy the original game so I can play this like an expansion pack?

Warband is standalone. No need for Mount and Blade. With Fire and Sword is also standalone and doesn't need either Warband or Mount and Blade.

Translation: There's basically no need to buy M&B Original or M&B WF&S

Well yes and no.

The orginal Mount and Blade had a lot more mods and varying quality, so if you like mods it's a good choice.
With Fire and Sword is a new time period and it's based more around a story then the first two which are all sandboxes.
I acutally find the combat in With Fire and Sword a bit more interesting. Units go down a lot quicker and theres less Heavy Horse beats all like in Mount and Blade/Warband. It's missing a few features from Warband but I heard they're meant to be getting patched in.

Disagreed... there's a few *fantastic* mods that were never ported over to Warband.

There are two that stand out for me.

Star Wars Conquest: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php?topic=40510.0
*FANTASTIC* mod. Very easy to become overpowered as a Jedi/Sith, so only play this on the more difficult settings. On normal difficulty, I was easily able to win a 10 vs. 150 fight as a Jedi late in the game... would really recommend playing as a non-force user for balance issues.

1866 Western Mod: http://forums.taleworlds.com/index.php/board,150.0.html
Wonderful, especially if you have even an inkling of interest in westerns. Even if you don't, it's worth a try.

These two mods are worth the price of M&B original alone.
