I take the Surgery skill myself, in case any doctor compainions decide to ditch(which has never actually happened to me), and I'm usually putting a sizable chunk of attribute points into Intelligence(for the extra skill point).

It seems that even a single level of Surgery can cause a dramatic decrease in fatalities. For a bonus, it also affects allies, and allies' Surgery skill seems to work on your guys(or not. Lords or enemies don't seem to ever have it, judging from the total death and destruction I wreak).

I wish that all the little tweeks in the looks and in the arena that are in Floris were included in every other mod. After playing it for awhile, I am finding it difficult to get into other total conversions. I have tried Brytenwalda, which looks like it is very detailed, but I can't get over the clunky look and feel after Floris. Same goes for Sword of Damocles and Prophesy of Pendor.  :'(

I recommend the Native Compilation Mod. Guess my post was too long and people didn't read it (:P), but it has all the nice features without all the cosmetic stuff. The cosmetic stuff makes my game unstable (too many sounds, something apparently wrong with some of the textures, etc).

As far as Surgery, I swore off taking it because it makes the game too easy. I even modified my npcs to not have it. The NPC lords don't use it, so your mere presence at a battle totally tips the scales into your faction's favor even if you don't fight, because your side will get mostly wounded while the other side will all get killed. It's too gamey imo. For instance, that big battle I participated in vs the Vaegirs with the Nord host - the Nords took loads of casualties like the Vaegirs, but still won due to my help. If I hadn't been there they would have lost, but even with me and my troops the nord army still took enough of a beating to temporarily break it up to recruit more troops. If I had surgery it would have really unbalanced things, making my side win and keep most of their soldiers and would have just moved on and wiped out the Vaegir stuff while their army was gone.

If the AI lords used it to keep their own troops from all dieing I'd be all for using it, but the way its implemented it gives too big of an advantage to the player.

Similar reason why I don't use horses, the AI doesn't respond well to mounted tactics, and it makes the game too easy if you're all mounted. It doesn't respond very well to foot soldier tactics either for that matter, but going foot vs mounted troops at least makes it a challenge.

I guess when you've been playing M&B for six years, you start to come up with personal challenges to make the game more fun :P. With surgery and armies of mounted troops (swadian knights or whatever) I could roll over everything and conquer the entire map in no time without even stopping to replace my losses, and the game would be boring. Instead I use the other features in the game to quickly replace troops (in the Compilation mod theres a feature to send out recruiters to bring back troops for you, and I make use of the trainer skill on me and my companions to quickly train troops up to the 3rd and 4th tier, where they're plenty good enough to act as foot soldiers). It makes the game more about managing your resources than just curbstomping everything in your way repeatedly.

After a big battle I have to go back to base and recruit more men, same as the AI lords have to do. The time taken doing that gives the AI more time to act, and I get more interesting situations. Instead of my side just sweeping the map, the other side has time to gather their forces and put up a fight of their own. I prefer longer campaigns where I'm acting as just one of the armies on the map instead of me being the superhero and marching through slaughtering the enemy and conquering them single handedly.

I also only play with no mount, and I don't use mounted units either. I just love the feel of an all infantry army, and only use ranged as skirmishers, unless ranged is infantry like in 1755 Old Frontier

See, I just turn the difficulty up

I have all the damages set to full, combat AI set to good, campaign AI set to good. Game is still too easy if I get high surgery and use a bunch of knights :D

I do play with one thing that makes the early game a bit easier, though. I always adjust arena betting to 10x, so if I win I get more cash. I lose 10x if I don't, but most of the tournaments are pretty easy if you command your side and I only lose if I get a really bad setup. Last time I lost an arena match was on the next to last tier with a 4 teams of 1 where it put Xerina and Dranton and a generic champion npc all armed with bows, and *all* of them focus fired on me. It gave me a crossbow.

Try playing Prophesy of Pendor with no surgery skill or horses and the difficulty all the way up.

Even with the dwarves on your side, I doubt you'd last long.

I don't use cavarly much, either. Although currently playing E&tRC I find myself using my horse for solo hit-and-run shootings often. Although I use an all-infantry(roughly half gun and half pikeman) army, I often stay in the saddle even if I'm not harassing the enemy. As their commander, I guess I'm expected to use a horse, since it physically sets me above my men as well as the metaphorical setting above that being the commander does.

My tactic with my infantry is to form a line, and sometimes have the melee troops advance-by-ten so they form protection for the rangers, especially at the top of a hill so they don't obstruct the gunners' view.

For combined arms tactics, you can order the infantry and archers to hold a line, then order your cavalry to follow you(assuming you're mounted), then lead the horses around to their flank or rear, then charge.

Wait... you can command allies in tournaments?  :o

Oh. Well, that would make life easier. I probably should've tried it, but it just... never occurred to me.  :-[

General strategy in EatRC is as follows, assuming My force is imperial: All infantry/gunner(same thing for the imperials) hold a position and fire at will. Everyone else (Retinue and cavalry) harass them when the enemy gets in range so the gunners have an easy time of it

Back when Warband's module system first came out I made a little mod that removed all shields and horses and bows/crossbows from the game. The ranged troops just had 3 stacks of throwing weapons with knives for backup, the melee had big 2h swords or axes or polearms. It was pretty entertaining. The ranged units would devastate the melee while they charged in, but in close quarters would get cut to pieces by the melee. I also cut the size of the battle maps down a bunch, so you were right in the action at the start of the battle. It was crazy and chaotic and fun.

I don't have the source for it anymore though, I must have deleted it when I uninstalled Warband a while back.

I should cut the battle map size down on the mod I'm playing, it can get kinda boring to run across the field repeatedly as a foot army. I can't remember how I did that though... been a while. Guess I'll have to fiddle around with the files.

-edit- Ah, I remembered. Had to modify the little code by the scenes in scenes.txt to make them smaller :D

In a bit I'm planning to buy mount and blade on steam so I'm wondering should I cough up the extra 5$ for the original game?
