So, are there any bad effects to disabling "All dwarves harvest"? I'd think in that case babies are going to grow into legendary blabberers.

You owe me a new keyboard, sir.

Endless stacks of "1 plump helmet" rather than "7 plump helmet"
resulting in barrels of "Dwarven beer (5)" rather than "Dwarven beer (35)"
NO LEGENDARY FARMERS!
Your Legendary Metalsmith stopping mid-hammer-stroke to walk across the map to collect a single plant - which withers before he gets there.

Have I done enough?

My favourite point in the game, aside from the excitement of sieges, is a tie between the first year or two, when I'm just getting it all set up and initialized, and the point between 50 and 100 dwarfs, when the fun of megaprojects and expanded industries start to appear, with spikes during trading time when I get "ZOMG! A new and interesting pet! Thank you elves! OMGWTFBBQ! A new crop! I love humans! Glee! More gems and rock than I know what to do with! Praise the dwarves!". In short, the fun times are when things happen, be they goblin assaults, construction, or industrial expansion.

I agree with the OP. I find the very beginning of the game the most fun, myself, when you've got only seven dwarves. You're still hauling the stuff from the wagon inside, predators are a threat, you're planning your fortress and exploring your surroundings.

Then the first migrant wave arrives (and for some reason pushes population all the way up to 20 or something - I'd much rather your initial population rose more slowly in the start, at a rate more proportional to your current pop, as in 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 16, 19, 23, 27..).

Later in the game, as we all know, everything is up and running, you're fending off even larger sieges without too many losses, your stockpiles are overflowing with crafts and food (especially if you use the overpowered farms). The challenge just goes away.

I think the best way to solve this would be to slow things down. Make digging, construction, and several other things in the game take longer. I frankly feels everything goes too fast, and that if it was this quick and painless for seven dwarves to go build themselves a home and have it expand into a massive 100-dwarf strong fortress, I feel everyone in dwarfdom would do it.

Might I suggest two things?
1. Use Dig Deeper.
2. Impose some challenges on yourself. I am not farming in soil in my current fort so that it takes effort to set up my farms.

Might I express my concern that current DF vanilla setup breeds reckless and unreliable rulers?

In current setup most players don't tend to a single fortress more than 3-5 years. After that the settlement becomes boring and messy. And players learn to not be very concerned with their fortress design and the well-being of the population. They just abandon it and start anew or even in a new universe.
And so, I find the most grave problems to be management and amending design flaws of the early game during later playing time. Right now the best solution, except abandoning, seems to be to flood your fortress with lava and then flood with water.

It even becomes totally impractical to grow food: my dwarves would never get from the awesome dining hall to the kitchen, let alone from the farms to the kitchen.
Which game are you playing? I've got 180 dwarves running off of one farmer's output.

Less, really- only need to run about three 6-rows about half the time.

As for most fun, the initial stage before you're dug in and before the wildlife depletes is fun, as is building a good megaproject once you hit about 50+. The intermediate phase (transitioning from barracks to single rooms and filling in all the holes in your workshops) is the slightly-less fun bit.

The 'problem' with 7 dwarves is everyone needs to do about 3 things. First immigration wave, if I'm prepared, brings with it the fun of specialisation and the artifact moods.

You'll want savage+evil, not just evil. Evil alone means cancelling for zombie mountain goats, which're cake.

Also? Go breach some HFS.

Another point is, the incompetence of the average overseer makes for more Fun in succession games.

1. ? (Seriously.) Does my question sound seasoned veteran or something? OK, I WILL google it... but more than a title might have helped - not just me but whatever other poor sap like me is reading this thread.
2. Yeah I get what you mean. My current goal is to flood a cave-system with a minotaur. Not quite a restriction, just a goal for the game... given that it's a treeless, magma-less, obsidian-plain desert (with a depleted magma pipe and chasm... 3bazillion antmen etc) this will be as hard a map as I have played. If it didn't have a brook I would have just not even struck the earth I think.

It is already linked to in this thread. I thought it redundant to link it twice. But here you go.

Might I express my concern ...
I totally agree with you - it's both a strength and weakness of the game that I can successfully trade trinkets of exceptional quality to the first caravan, and indeed this can be the easiest way to get rid of an annoying consequence of digging, yet I also end up with a totally defective food management scheme. Honestly, I lose more food than my dwarves eat - and my solution is to just buy out the traders and stop bothering with food. I stack kitchens below the trading depot and a dining hall below that.

But then how much of Detroit or New York's food is grown within the city boundaries? I'm more interested in trying to get legendary weaponsmiths than have a bunch of symbols moving seeds, plants, etc backwards and forwards.

Give me a map wih fuel and i can get smiths or glass working, but I can't manage primary industry nor can I manage to pump PROPERLY (ie: beyond empty the pond into a ditch, in a way that probably doesn't even need a pump to work).

For me the beginning years where Im just setting up are the funnest then again at around 50-100 pop when I can expand and start larger scale projects/industries. For me what kills it is the fact that things are more complex and thus take more time to complete pluss fps dropping. If I could keep fps close to what it was when I started I could easily last longer I think.

Can someone point me to the actual current STABLE/"non-broken" version please? Or did they fix the whole "no new dwarves after year1" thing that people are going on about at the end of the thread?

You may want to try what I'm currently trying, as a fellow n00b:

Mountain
Temperature: Freezing
Trees: None
Other Vegetation: None
Surroundings: Terrifying
Brook: The Bee of Guilt

STRIKE THE EARTH!

Edit: Oh, yeah, and an aquifer, since I'm still trying to learn how to deal with water.

It's easy to get through an aquifer in freezing climates. Dig a pit, wait for it to freeze, dig it out, smooth the sides.

If you really want to learn, try again in a non-freezing climate.
But doing that without trees would make it pretty hard (no blocks, no corkscrews, how do you pump?)
