Dwarf Fortress Tabletop RPG!
« on: February 04, 2010, 07:10:27 pm »

Hello all, I've lurked a long time in there forums, and I've got a request for you all. I'm running a 4-hours tabletop dungeon crawl under GURPS rules (Almost as much limb-severing and disemboweling fun as DF!) and I realized that instead of having to laboriously design my own layout, traps, treasure and monsters, I already know a game full of absurd carp, homicidal guardians, deep Fun Stuff, and endless traps!

So, I'd like people to post their fortresses and I will convert it into a 4-hour game for my party to die hilariously in! Feel free to give suggestions for the inevitable tantruming dwarf to fight, etc. I plan to run the game as if the fortress is abandoned and has been for a while, to at least give them *some* chance before they inevitable encounter undead carp Fun.

Okay, I'll give you a few ideas.

Baron's Room = Magma Death Trap
Make a fabulously carved door with a plaque declaring the room as belonging to the Baron.  Then inside have a the room burnt to about the waist deep level.  Remember the obsidian rubble from where the dwarves had to start carving out the room again.

WTF! Engravings
It ain't Dwarf Fortress without engravings depicting dwarves dying in horrible ways.  Be sure to include the tentacle demons.  For added effect put it over the dining room table.

Menaces with Spikes of <Whatever>
Everything should menace with spikes.

Stupid Artifacts
Make artifacts out of the worst possible materials.  Stack terrible materials for added effect.  Put a picture of the craftsman holding the artifact over his head on it - think Link finding a piece of the triforce.  Oh, and make sure it worst 100,000 dwarf bucks.

Use Dwarf Fortress Names
Don't name anything yourself.  Use Dwarf Fortress to name everything.  From the engravings to the artifacts to the dwarves themselves.

Stuck in Lever Hell
Make a room full of unlabeled levers that fire off traps & bridges around the fort.  Buckets of fun.  And Magma.

The Glowing Pit
Now's the time to pull out tentacle demons for X-Rated fun.

Revenge of the Hammerer
The Hammerer is such a prick.  Have his skeleton come back to jack up the party with his shiny steel warhammer.

Read Boatmurdered
Boatmurdered would make a nice setting.

I'm pretty sure your gamers are going to kick the crap out of you but hey, if that's your idea of fun, go for it.

There was a thread of this nature just a few weeks ago. But no matter.

Have you got a setting yet? If not, this setting might be relevant to your interests. The dwarves are intentionally straight out of DF. The only thing which might slightly detract in your minds is that there are no tree-hugger elves, but the Sidhe (essentially Yamato eugenicist High Elves) fit the role just fine in terms of social interaction.

Also, much of the craziness is attributed to fey influence, but most characters shouldn't really know about that. It does result in an emphasis on Iron which doesn't exist in DF, however.

GURPS rules for it are untested, and not really finished, so keep that in mind if you decide to go with it.

Awesome, I'll have to look through those maps. In general, I wanted to see if someone was saying "Ooh! I've got a map I did that would be *awesome* for that!

I full plan to use as many of those ideas I can cram into my game, but it is only a 4-hour one-shot, sadly.

How about we make our own RPG rule system based on DF? ^^

I play DnD like a dwarvish adventurer. Catastrophically and monstrously cruel, in other words. I also kill most elves on sight out of principle.

Because that would be a lot of work? And GURPS is great for it?

Normally I would oppose GURPS, but seeing as there are no vehicles to speak of in DF, GURPS is probably pretty cool. I think Call Of Cthulhu would work well, considering the insanity aspect ever-looming over the heads of the dwarves.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I'd put my 2 copper coins in for Rolemaster. With its ridiculous level of detail and extremely gory combat mechanics, it's a natural fit for DF. And it appeals to people who are into micromanagement and quantifying EVERYTHING.

I recently joined a roleplaying thread on a website. It was your typical lame 'Let's go get {x} to do {x}!' sort of plot, with it's own lame assortment of elves, demons and demon elves (There are TWO of the latter!). So, I decided, what the hey.

Enter Erush Morulloron, Sheriff and Mayor of Craftarm, my current fortress. I had a bit of creative license (He doesn't really have a set of steel armour, and he is actually a hammerdwarf instead of an axedwarf) but overall, he was very DF in style. He holds all the elves in the group in absolute contempt, considers the human child (who is about his height and likes to knife everyone for no reason) somewhat likeable and has managed to ride a horse after someone gave him a leg-up. Not to mention, I constantly have the language_DWARF.txt open whenever writing. Just for authenticity. Erush likes to talk about things back home, like the traps guarding the entrance, the plump helmets and pig tails, the stench of dead goblin all over the courtyard, stuff like that. It is loads of fun.

In fact, after I finish with the succession game fort that I'm doing, I might just make up a map for adventurers to play...
