Oceanic threats
« on: February 03, 2010, 11:05:54 am »

We all know the carp, the crocodiles and giant -whatever- are threats.

but in all my fortresses I have never had any problems with say. Sharks. Not only are they rare, but they're horrible elusive and I haven't had the pleasure of losing a single fisherdwarf to them.

Sharks and other oceanic creatures are nothing more than decoration from what I've seen. and lakes are usually empty of anything and everything other than regular fish.

I was wondering if anyone has any different stories? and perhaps tips on how to get "fun" out of sharks?

Mod them to appear in evil biomes and hope you get a few skeletal ones

Be glad you've never experienced the terror that is a skeletal whale. With them, if you make a single wrong step they will DESTROY your legendary military, ignore your super-powerful weapon traps, and cause great Fun all around. Plus, if they are undead, they can FLY out of the water to destroy you easily.

I once embarked on a Sinister beach.  Never again.  Within the first season, a pod of about a dozen skeletal whales swarmed up from the beach and slaughtered my Dwarves one by one.  Outside of evil biomes, however, the ocean is shockingly safe.  Just don't drop anything you want to keep intact on the beach, or the ocean waves will carry those items off.

IIRC flying and swimming civs are sort of broken right now. No idea if that's going to be fixed in the next release.
