Why don't you trust Java?

1) It's powerful.
2) It can run off a web page.

So, unless I trust the site hosting it, or the site I downloaded it from, I won't use java from that site.
Hackwars put all it's content in-game, so I cannot judge the site well without running the java.

Also, I'm not all that obsessed with object oriented programming (I use C! Not C++ or java!), so my mild dislike of java's inability to run without being 100% object oriented carries over to some things made with it.

I understand the security part, but the Object Oriented Language part:

What does what language a game is written in have to do with the playablility of the game  :D

The security part is just as silly.  OH NO, JAVA.  The sandbox is pretty well designed.

I'm half tempted to embed an applet in this reply just to scare qwerty.

Think of it this way:
A java applet can scan your computer for viruses, I think.

And also remove them.

Maybe I am remembering it wrong, but I think that was java.

Now, if it can be used in such a beneficial way, how hard could it be to turn those capabilities towards evil ends? Especially when such people are likely more determined and devious, so much more likely to do so.

You don't download and run every single .exe linked to on a web page, do you?

If you did, how many viruses would you have?
Certainly not 0, unless they erased themselves along with the rest of your HD.

Edit:
Also, isn't this about a "hacking" game?
Such paranoia is HEALTHY, at least in-game, right?

You're thinking of HouseCall, right?  See...  That doesn't run from the browser.  You download a thing that lets it run, and it acts as a kind of plugin.  Yeah, if this game popped up with a little window that says "Hackwars would like to install a plugin", obviously it's time to leave.  But Java, running in its sandbox, is totally safe.

If you let it out of the sandbox, well, that's your fault--but you have to make a conscious decision to do that.
