problem is, all the clever part about ship design is quite useless because exponential gain will negate almost any small gain a good design may give.

the good news is that you can alter the game parameter a lot, so if you want to give more strategical importance to ship design you can make the level curve 1.1 instead 1.4 and tune research cost in many ways to nerf research and building production to limit expansion and make getting on good planets counts.

Yes, I would be much happier if the gains were linear instead of exponential. The way it works right now is terrible, but I am sure BlindMind knows this.

Also, yea, that is pretty much what we do. I only play online with a select few friends, and we are always arguing over how to properly nerf research. One of my friends wanted games of 3.0 instead of 1.4! What the heck! Haha :) Anyways I agree with 1.1, although the fact that is still exponential still bothers me. I'd like it if each level increased the effectiveness of whatever by 10% of the base, not 10% of the current effectiveness.

Can anyone tell me how to modify the hulls so that I would be able to put more and bigger sub sistems on them?

make the whole ship bigger in size, and components smaller

that is, a size 4 laser on a size 10 ship is the same power than a size 1 laser on a size 40 ship

The thing that I am trying to make is to make the hulks to have more space. For example to change the Heavy hull so it would have 50 space for sub sistems.

$GameFolder\Game Data\Sub Systems\ship_systems.txt
Change Size value of hulls to " Object.Size * (x / 15) " where x is how much space you want (light hull is first entry in a file so you can look at that). " Object.Scale * x " should give same effect. However standard 15 is a lot and I dont know why would you like to have more. Having higher scale would have exactly same effect (even ingame model size and materials needed in construction).

So, I've picked this up again and seem to have the hang of it a bit better, and am trying the Galactic Armory mod. Any tips or suggestions on how to go about what looks to be a massive content upgrade for an already huge game?

You... got GA to work with the latest steam patch? How? I didn't look too hard, but it seemed at first glance like it was incompatible with the latest version (no blueprints button!) :-\

The repair tool never seems to work for me.
As for the tech thing, that never seems to effect me. I always try to grab the rail gun artillery thing and sensors early off. For the purposes of spamming crazy insta-kill stations. Then I just kinda screw around.

Pirates kick my ass at the beginning of a game, when I can't afford to spam small ships or any decent big ones.

The latest non-beta version works with 1.2, the current Star Ruler version. Seems to do just fine, aside from a crash I had earlier due to doing something silly.

Edit: I've crashed twice now, both after ~two hour games. I have a feeling it has something to do with the Improvement (Terraforming) system, since that was the only thing I was doing at both times, but I'll see if I can't recreate it.

Ah, I see it! Thanks. Wanted to give this a shot -- being able to specializing in my standard drone/energy weapon ships straight from the start is very appealing, heh.

I'll give it a shot and see how I can get my ass kicked ;D

E: Or it can crash in pretty short order. Sadface. Zooming in apparently caused it to die, I'unno. Maybe it was something the AI did.

E2: Yeah, comp just doesn't have the ram to zoom in in GA, for some reason. Trying to do so jacks the usage high enough to crash the program. Bleh.

Probably the large number of objects in a main system; there are probably ~200+ asteroids in my usual starter system alone. I still crash with 16 GB of RAM and 4 GB of VRAM.

Edit: Yeah... GA seems really crash prone. Which is a shame, because I am addicted to all the new features. I ran a 26 hour game (simulated, at 10x speed) on normal Star Ruler without a hitch, and can't go two hours in 1x speed without getting a CTD. But it is still technically a beta for 1.2, so I guess they'll work out the kinks soon enough.

Just a note here for folks who cant install the game from steam:
If you install the free demo then get steam to install the normal game over the top of it, it works. :)

Is this game worth it? I mean I played the demo a while back, and it seemed really nice, but the replay ability seemed a bit lacking. There are some new features now that its updated right?

the game is NOTHING if not replayable. Other than that, I would try a demo again first to make sure you like it.
