forskaen: Because I found this interesting, but upon reading the post I linked decided to mention a game that is far less buggy. Unless there's something wrong with that?

Also from what I understnad they aren't very similar.  Isn't AI War more about fighting against an uneven opponent in a flat plane RTS with tons of units than it is about building a gigantic interstellar empire?

Yes, but in some cases it can be more harm than good. It does help the whole "realism" feel though.

I prefer Distant Worlds by far for my 4x space fix.

How exactly does a space game having 3 dimensions do more harm than good?

Because we as land dwelling mammals aren't innately oriented towards three dimensional thinking?

You tell me: When you've got galaxies at 500+ stars and they aren't flattened, it becomes a chore to make sure that you're trying to colonize them all. Things sneaking in at the edges of your planets can be difficult to notice. Chaos and hysteria in the streets. That sorta thing.

It's not all that 3D. All you have to do is go one or two systems up and down to carve out a hole in the plane of stars.

I'm kind of confused as to why you would complain about the one space 4X game that's actually set in outer space instead of some sort of star painted ocean being 3d.  If you want a naval 4X game there are quite a lot of those, and most of them are significantly more stable.  You might as well be complaining that The Ship doesn't have balanced character classes.  Like all those class based first person shooters.

And mainstream gamers complain that I don't want them to have the fifteen games a year per genre they get.
