game model?

if you mean the models that represent the ships, yeh currently each empire uses the same set. You can select different scales for your ship designs. Different ship models are assigned to different scales. (im not sure of the exact boundaries here but)  theres a model for ships scaled 15-30 in size, then another for 30-100, and another for 100-399 etc.

So you do get a variety of ships if you have different size ships but currently only colours distinguish the differing empires.

Ok, the ability to design your own look would be cool but I already knew that wasn't in.  So what model do the size 30 size 100 etc ships use?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

so these ships are size 100-299 me thinks, you can also see some size 20+/- ships in there too

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

this is about size 4 or 5

(at the smaller sizes there are more models, so fighters, cruisers and destroyers are all covered) this ones a cruiser

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

and this one is over 400 in size

Yeah... looks shopped, or just a very artistic shoot. But awesomeness =x

Also, mining lasers: how do they work? Is there a specific type of object I can sic the ships equipped with them on?

Yeah, that last shot's a beauty.

I've been building mining ships in systems with asteroids.  If you see little floating rocks in a system, make a couple in-system ships with mining lasers and they should automate themselves into blasting them up and hauling the raw material to either a planet or a freighter.

Quick question about the game: Is it worth £13.08?

I think so; you won't find anything quite like it in a AAA title, and it does get updated fairly often.

How stable is it? The demo keeps crashing, but I'd assume it's more stable than that.

It... depends. I've had a few games where it crashes right off the bat (ten minutes or so in) and some games I've gotten to completion; it's more like a polished beta at the moment, and bug fixes are taken care of pretty quickly.

So how many different models are there per set and what sizes do they represent?

not sure how many there are in total, my guestimate is 15+, ive personally seen about 6 or 7 tho, most of the much larger and much smaller designs are rare, in that the AI and i dont use em much.

Quick question about the game: Is it worth £13.08?

yes i think so. Its relitively unique, it does what a space 4x should which is create a feeling of epicness and grandure, and then fight for dominance in it. I cant remember exactly how complete its supposed to be but im guessing its around 60%, theres still alot of content to come (similar to another game i know). I say its unique because it employs more hard scifi stuff than many 4x games, such as neutonian physics, which make the strategy alot different to other games. It has, by a fair margin imo the best ship design system ive seen. Its also stable in my experience. Its weakness are: it is still unfinished, currently there are no victory conditions, just sandbox, could do with distinct species, and in general alot more stuff. In general id say ship building aside the game is a little low depth in many areas. Diplomacy, actual combat orders, could be more detailed.

Also its a reliviley easy game to play. You could beat the basic lvl1 ai if you can: colonise, build ships, and declare war. I could probably count on my hands the number of comands you need to figure. This is just the basics tho, there is more to it.

I can never really get into this game... it's boring overall. I was playing on a default map and everything, turn it on easy mode and everything. Play the game and all I could do is just design ships, scout planets, Colonize planets, and research everything. I've never gone to war with anyone else, This economy system is pretty much boring... it just not very fun. Therefore I've just uninstalled the game, and won't come back... it's a waste of cash in my opinion as there is nothing fun in the game... No big massive battles, AI just sends treaty after treaty, AI never get's Irritated by me or something, no special abilities for my empire, no officer's and whatnot, no advisor's... I could go on.

Good, this probably isn't the game for you.
