I'll buy this again on Steam because I don't feel like dealing with Impulse at the moment. Awesome asking price for a game this good.

ok, I've managed to survive past the starting phase, even if now I'm in middle game trouble as I overdid it and crashed my economy.

I'll have to shut down half of my newly created colonies, but the tech advantage I have right now could help me survive from the AI swarming me.

random noob notice: remember to remove cities if the governor built to many too early and now you have a population surplus

What is bad about a population surplus? According to the tutorial, more population means a greater multiplier on all industry and mining

it doesn't help with research and such, so you have to balance them out and neglect them entirely on research world.

and it costs you more luxury and standard goods and food to maintain

you have not to reduce the surplus to zero, just to manage (more like juggle :P ) with planet spaces which are a premium resource.

I do like the idea of bulldozing an entire city because they use too many luxury goods.

Do I need to build a big fleet of military ships at the start?

Do I need to build a big fleet of military ships at the start?
Only if you want to fight off the inevitable enemy attack.

More seriously, yes it's a good idea to maintain a decent military fleet at least in your home system because the AI will most certainly try to hit you at some point and it will probably be before you're ready.

Also: I just discovered the wonderous joy of building planetary thrusters, cannons, shields and lasers and rocketing around the universe with my homeworld deathsphere. Boy, planets sure make tough ships!

it depends, if you're ahead in research and keep some reserve in the world bank you can just spam bombers at the enemy (the default design even)

I personally found them very weak when you possibly can make them. At that tech level a high scale ship can make a planet unowned very easily. And let's not even speak of artillery stations that can shoot across star systems and kill them with a single hit.

Will a station orbiting a planet automatically be refueled by the planet? Or should I throw on a ram scoop to collect fuel? I'm trying to design an orbital defense platform for my worlds.

It should automatically refuel by default settings, yes.
