Though not the best teaser in the world, here's gameplay teaser one.

Next teaser will have more footage, more resolution, and (hopefully) some interaction.

We're still having issues with our video capturing software that we're trying to get resolved; once resolved, the shooting for the next teaser can begin.

If you're having trouble, you could try Cam Studio, its fairly good and is free.

Unfortunately, not fast enough.  We specifically need a recording software that is built to be used on multi-core rigs.

That's pretty much why we're using PlayClaw.  Of all the recording software we tried (and we tried a lot of them) PlayClaw was head and shoulders better than the others (a huge improvement over FRAPS, even).

Oh. Em. Gee. That trailer made the game look like a hybrid of Homeworld and Master of Orion.

Which is seven dimensions of awesome.

Wait, the game is a mix of Homeworld and Master of Orion, right? Or am I shooting airballs here?

My personal opinion is that, through mixing, the closest I can come to describing the game is "Space Empires IV in the Nexus: The Jupiter Incident engine, but with better multiplayer and a huge amount of modability."

Still, that's a pretty decent comparison; it doesn't fully work but it gets the basic stuff right. :)

Holy smokes! Nexus AND SEIV? That's in the same league as my HW&MOO comparison!

I'm hooked. Time for me to register on your forums!

Click for the full-sized image! (1440x900)

Today we got our planet rings finally in.  It does highlight our need to grab better atmospheric textures and ground textures; we'll be investigating that as we approach release.

As before, I am more than willing to answer any questions anyone has about the game. :D

I believe you mentioned earlier about taking over planets with a few remaining industry, and you seem to be familiar with SEIV so:

If a planet is conquered through whatever means, how will immigration/emigration work (if it is even in)?  I mean, will mixed populations benefit or possibly hurt your planetary "happiness" or whatever system you are putting in?  Will players have different species with various bonuses (better research, faster breeding, etc)?

I realized that one actually can go locust and eat everyone in a giant ship. You said that you can attach engines to planets, yes? And planets can carry workers. So, one simply has to work backwards and turn a planet into a ship, not a ship into a planet.

Currently, the only way you can take over a planet is by destroying its population.  In the future should we have planetary invasion (which we do desire to put into the game) there will probably be mechanics similar to what you described.  Also, planets are currently 'always happy' with your performance as a leader.  If we do have defection that will likely be a factor in your people's overall reaction to your governance. (This is another want that we can't guarantee will be in 1.0 as we're very close to release; but is likely something that will be added in later)

Planet-ships are distinct from planet-sized ships in that they have the ability to turn raw materials into finished products, which ships do not currently have.  Should that distinction disappear, then the main benefit of a planet becomes its massive health and ruggedness (which is also a good argument to pick up a Star and turn it into a battle station as it will be, in most games, practically invincible unless specifically countered.

Star Ruler is now available for Pre-Order through GamersGate.

Whenever you pre-order the game, you should receive a serial key; if you include that serial when you apply to the beta we will prefer you when we draw from our next wave. However, due to the volume of testers applying, it's not a guarantee.

EDIT: Got a report from someone who purchased from GamersGate that said they did not receive a key.  If you did not receive a key, e-mail GamersGate or me (firgof@blind-mind.com) and we will get it worked out.

This game looks incredible. I told myself I wouldn't buy anymore games until after summer, but I'm sorely tempted to pre-order this.

$20?  I think I can get behind that.  Probably will have to be after I get Peace Walker...

For those interested, Artem Bank is putting up the Star Ruler soundtrack over at Bandcamp and will be streaming it all the way to the game's release (and adding tracks as they make it into the game).  They're not all quite up yet (it's a work in progress) but they ought to be very soon. Feel free to drop by and give a listen. :)
