Installing 3D games over 2D?
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:54:57 pm »

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I vaguely recall a topic once upon a time where people talked about the playable hilarities generated by installing 3D versions over 2D and visa versa. Two things: one, I need to be sure I'm not just going insane trying to find something that doesn't exist - and two, I'd like to hear anything interesting people have managed to do with this, if anything.

If this is in the wrong place or just a dumb topic, I'll proudly let it die, but I'd just like to check.

It has to do with the structure of the raws.
Unzipping (there's no installer, how could it be an installation?) any of the 3D versions over an existing copy of the 2D versions will cause it to "think" (I'll try my best to put it in layman's terms...) that one raw entry is another.
The most common side-effect is what we call Wizard Fortress.

There's a magical creature in the raws. It's the wizard. Normally, they aren't anywhere in the game. When this glitch occurs, your dwarves will be replaced by wizards.

... and wizards can throw fireballs. This results in lots of !!fun!!.

Scroll down on the page the latest (non-open GL/SDL) version of DF is on, and there will be a list of previous versions.
