My friends have tried to delete DF and my fortresses in an effort to stop me playing DF.

I taught myself the game using a tutorial (only partly), then experimenting and consulting the wiki.

Most of the things I now understand.

Also; I tend to explain the Z-level system by taking houses as an example. ('Every 'Z-level' is like the stories in your houses. So that window would be one Z level higher than that one.') - Most of them get it.

Unfortunately the graphics, even the Mayday tileset, turned them off.

Well, if they can't get past the ASCII, it's their problem. Adom is all ASCII and still it's one of the greatest games ever, and it does not try to find excuses for ASCII graphic, I don't see why DF should.

For me it's beautiful, even in curses_square. People just have different tastes and you can't do anything about it :). If they can't make themselves to look past graphics and at the gameplay, probably they are not the persons to play DF and see stories in ASCII (or whatever replaces it).

Caesar, did you try to show them a Sphr creatures' version? I like it more than Mayday's tiles for critters.

Well I came up with a newbie set that had the following:

DF 40d16
Mayday tileset (based on friends' input, I showed them the wiki page)
Dwarf Therapist
Visual Fortress
The Complete and Utter Newbie Tutorial pdf
The save that goes with it
A cursory description of the function of each

I'm giving it to them on Monday, and I'll see how that goes.

What about sticking yourself into anything found in a public area which talks back?

DF really has to be approached as a challenge rather than a game initially. Just tell your friends if they can't figure it out it means the game is smarter than them.  :D

What about sticking a pointy eared cannibal found in a public area into a volcano?

Some friends and I decided to start a DF succession game and document it all on Facebook. Other than the fun, my ulterior motive is to add friends to the group we use so they can read what happens. I mean, people read anything on FB to pass the time, might as well provide them something the gamers and nerds will enjoy, and hopefully entice them to play as well.

That's alright. make sure you also stick anyone that seems horrified into the volcano as well.

That's not just it. My sister is an avid ADOM player, but she doesn't bother to learn DF, because the learning curve is too steep and she doesn't want to bother spending a few hours on the Internet learning it when there's so many other games to play.

I got two of my brothers to play (for a bit).  one of my brothers' experiences went like this:

(i had already showed him the game, and i brought my save and stuff for him to play with)
me: so there you go; its all set up. here is a pretty good site to start with, set your dorfs to mine here (etc.....)
him: thanks man
me: see you later, have fun, don't worry if you loose, its part of the fun!
him:yea yeah, later......(tap tap tap)

45 minutes later i get home.  i walk in the door. sit down and the phone rings.  my mother in law answers and then passes the phone to me.......

him: F YOU!!!!

a fire imp burnt his whole world and everything in it to ash about 2 minutes after left :D  he wasn't too pissed, i think i need to convince him to try again.
