NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! All that work~!
« on: February 02, 2010, 03:01:23 am »

So you ever have DF crash on for no appearent reason and then realize ... you've been playing all night working on all your projects... And you just lost every single one?

I just had one of those, I had my Magma workshops set up, a really nice Magma Duct that had all the kinks worked out... couple artifacts and a large section mined out.

And then it just crashed on me....  I lost everything....

So lets hear your horror stories about that situation (I wonder if I shouldn't run DT or QF with it or something... it was a totally random crash)

It's called [AUTOSAVE:SEASONAL] mate.
Sorry about your loss though :p

Never experienced anything big like that due to autosave, but I occasionally lose the designation of a big fortress.

Vista corrupting my harddrive requiring a format, and the last backup being about a month old. Attempted data recovery, but failed. Not played DF since, always saying I'll be waiting for the next release since it won't be backwards compatible.  :'(

Actually I use  Autosave:YEARLY cause seasonal caused way to man backups... (I have autoback up)

Sadly I was into fall, I think the dwarfs were just leaving.
On the plus-side...well I remember how I had the magma-works set up so that can be done quicker, however I don't remember what else I had gotten done...  Also gives me a chance to read over the Trade agreements with the humans and the dwarfs for more profit.
Luckily prior to that I was testing things... though I wonder if added SPECNAMEs to a lot of the creatures who's males and females have seperate names might be a small root.

I don't like autosaves, so this happens to me probably once a week. Usually I just tell myself I can get all that work done again, but odds are I forget something. Still, once you've done something right once, you can only do it better the second time.

I just save and quit, and then go back Ito the game when I've done something important. It crashed once, and I've been cautious since.

.. once you've done something right once, you can only do it better the second time.

It's quite the opposite for me. I ALWAYS tend to mess up every attempt at reaching the quality I had reached at first.

On the other hand my first attempts usually go extremely well.

Interesting.

As a person who does all of these things, I'd say that what you're doing is essentially letting your creativity flow the first time. and then you try to recreate what you just did by analyzing and reconstructing. Copying, if you will.

Not only does this use another part of the brain (logics) it is also a "forced" reaction and not inspiration. Thus destroying quality.

I might just be talking out of my ass however, there is nowhere enough info for me to make this call. Doesn't matter. Just my 2 cents.

Happens occasionaly to me, its somewhat annoying, but soon I realise I had fun making whatever it was I lost, and that I can make it better this time.

And theres allways something I can make better, im a hopeless perfectionist.

Still I usualy safe after completing something large. Minors improvements are nice and all, but too much of that and my fort will never progress and ill get bored of it.

This, along with seasonal autosaves.
Even if nothing too big has actually been accomplished, I like to save after, say, designating the entire fortress for digging.

Once or twice I had that happen when I was coming up with an elaborate plan or idea. Just as I get started, the game locks up, and it's not autosaving either, or it just randomly crashes like Firefox sometimes.

I only really have seasonal backups set whenever I work on a megaproject (like Bloodfist for example). Damn helpful as well if I forget to upload a map of a particular season as well. As for other fortresses, I might go every half-year or year, since as much attention wouldn't be necessary.

As an alternative solution, I made a total isolated folder (a few layers of folders until you actually reach a version) on a different drive on my computer, and keep related material in such.

Ironically enough, I still do my Bloodfist stuff on the crashing area, and it hasn't locked up yet. It could have been a memory or drive space issue. I guess if that's so, it helps to have plenty of space, and optimize regularly.

I like your analysis, Aspgren.  Turning your analysis around, I think I myself approach things logically & analytically the first time, and then get a creative inspiration afterwards.  So for me the first approach is over engineered and not so good, but much more elegant when I do it over.  To tie that back to the topic of this thread, on the rare occaisions where I've lost a DF game due to a crash, I've looked at it as a chance to go back and fix what was wrong with the first time I played that particular fortress.

I've actually never had DF crash. The worst that ever happens is that when I run the game in full screen (higher FPS) if the window minimizes it glitches and morse code like stuff comes up instead ASCii graphics.(basically the game glitches beyond playability)AND since my comp will minimize DF every time it gets bored(it's hard to keep this lil bugger entertained), or when I walk off and the screensaver pops up I frequently lose months of work because I wanted a soda.

If you hit a dwarf with moving water with sufficient strength it will knock the baby out of the mother's arms.  The water can then be used to sweep the baby into a well or cistern for drowning.  The device which does this can also double as a mist generator.
