Hammers or Maces
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:02:48 am »

Since hammers and maces are the exact same mechanically, the only difference would be thematically. So, if you use either of these, which do you prefer? I like hammers, they just seem so dorfy to me. The smooth, flat sides squishing a goblin's skull, and the fact that it's based on a tool.

Hammers and axes have always been the dwarfiest of weapons in my opinion. The hammers make perfect sense, for the reason you stated, but I'm not sure why axes would... I just remember the Morian battle cry from LotR. "Baruk Khazad! Khazad ai-menu!" ("Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!") However they piss elves off something fierce, and that's never a bad thing.

I use wrestlers in my fortress though ;D

Hammers sound great to me too. It's just... the idea of a hammer, I think. A mace is heavy but also spiky, a hammer destroys solely through its sheer crushing weight. I would say it's similar to the difference between using a sniper rifle (which is cool) and a sword (which is FRIGGIN' AWESOME).

I think in the next version, the distinction between hammer and mace will be a lot more different. I'm not entirely sure how so, but I do recall talk of it being different.

Hammers and axes, with spears for big things and swords for any damn thing. Hammers are better because they're also the skill used with crossbows in melee, and because goblin golf is easier with hammers than maces. Axes are useful because of the way they make goblins explode, spears are useful for big things and thematic reasons, and swords are good because I usually have large quantities of obsidian and stonecrafters are easier to get than weaponsmiths.

Hammers. Maces don't send Elves flying off 30z high cliffs.

Dwarven protocol dictates that the only acceptable weapons are as follows:

Axes
Hammers
Whips

Only acceptable weapon for traps are Large Serrated Discs.

Make your enemies think twice by committing atrocious war crimes against them, elves are acceptable targets as well.

With [SLOW_LEARNER], dwarves probably don't sit around and talk anymore. They just stand in the same corner altogether, staring at each other, sticking their bearded lips out trying to make sounds. And giggling when someone actually says a whole word.

The difference between real life warhammers and warhammers in DF is that ours has a blunt end for crushing bone and a spike end for awesome armor penetration.

maces dont have an edge just a circular sphere thing for crushing without the need for spilling blood.

Red color is more true to Armok than purple. Also, pump operators (i.e. trainees) and siege operators are red as well, so you can pretend that all your military-related dwarves wear red uniform.

(...) you can pretend that all your military-related dwarves wear red uniform.

And in the next update, you can actually mandate all military dwarves wear a red dyed cloak, or any other uniform. Better look up the wiki on dyes :p

Edit just for clarity: That would be next version, not a new 40dxx.

And I personally go with hammers, but I always end up with at least a squad for each weapon, except spears, all spears will go to the guards, royal guards get the best axes I can make.

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?
(Full frontal ones, apparently.  With very short beards.)

Sure, I know that thing about uniforms in the next version. But I wonder if we will be able to change their displayed color as well...

because maces and hammers are just so similar, I tend to modout the mace in favour of weapons which arent the exact same.
I currently have slingshots which shoot blunt projectiles, replacing the mace.

Hammers, because if they get a spine/brain wound I can set them to crossbow use and they'll be very effective.

Outside of the hammer/mace discussion I give my military axes, for the dwarfness, hammers, for the punting foes and help with crossbows, crossbows, for range, and swords if I have obsidian.

It makes you wonder why they have even implemented maces.

Though I assume it's because of the damage type ... maces would be bashing/piercing while axes are bashing/cutting and hammers simply bashing/awesome.

In my fortresses I like to vary the gear of the soldiers with a preference for swords and crossbows. But the melee troops always go in mixed - I don't divide between hammer groups and sword groups.

This is part because I love the idea of dwarves charging forward with random weapons and armor instead of marching uniform with matching gear. Also it is practical in the sense that every damage type available gets hurled at the enemy.

As an example. I don't want to micromanage more than I have to and send the hammerer group to kill skeletal creatures (hammers are, by the way, great against skeletals) I prefer to simply send "group one."
The only micromanagement I do there is to differentiate meleedwarves and marksdwarves.

An interesting note. For some reason sword, spear and marksdwarves have a higher casualty rate than hammers, maces and axes. This casualty rate has been more or less persistent in all my forts regardless of how I have assigned the military's weapons and gear.

I'd like for my dwarfs to be able to strike with their maces then pull them back with the goblin's head still stuck to it.
