Dragon Age dwarves
« on: February 01, 2010, 11:40:46 pm »

When I play Dragon Age, I can't help but think of Dwarf Fortress when it comes to the dwarves. So many interesting parallels. (SPOILER ALERT)

A good screenshot of Orzammar.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Hall of Heroes is the entrance to the Fortress. The south leads to the outside world, the North leads to the Commons. North further leads to the arena, and the West goes to Dust town (one z-level down). The Diamond Quarter is three Z-levels above the Commons, with a magmafall that divides the center. The rest of the pictures will be posted in my next post. This only allows three embedded images.

I do plan to mod in Nugs as a cheap livestock when the next version hits.

For those that don't know, they're essentially cave rabbits. They have bigger teeth, are about a foot long and fuzzy, omnivorous and voracious scavengers. They fill many niches in the underground food chain.

[/spoiler] Here are the other two maps. I won't bother uploading the other maps. Go to the Wiki if you want the smaller maps for reference.

Megabonus points if someone can mod in darkspawn. Mass Effect 2 bonus points if they can mod in the Archdemon.

I thought the same when I saw Dragon Age. Someone offered to show me some gameplay.
I told him to choose a dwarf, name him Urist and the first time I saw the fortress I went all OH SHIT, IT'S DWARF FORTRESS.

DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

Sadly, there is no option to dump magma on the asshole nobles. And I saw no elaborate and oftentimes inexplicable deathtraps.

But yeah, much of the other stuff is pretty eerie.

Most people in the Dragon Age thread were saying otherwise but I'm pretty certain that at least one of the game's writers played Dwarf Fortress, if you listen to your companion's remarks there were a couple of hints and at least one straightforward allusion

"I wonder where they put all the stone?"

I think that was Leliana but it could have been Alistair or Morrigan

It think that was Morrigan.

There is also mention of there being 7 founding dwarfs.

I love the style of Dragon Age dwarves. They look a little like Warhammer dwarves but more civil and less punk. Their architecture has great theme. It look pretty futuristic but uses big sculptures and really has underground atmosphere. It kinda reminds me how some crystals break.

And their fear of falling in the sky is so funny and a brilliant idea.

Well, I had a dream (long before I've tried DF, probably after some Lord of the Rings or Hobbit books, I was about 10) that i am a dwarf (or maybe gnome, I don't remember), I left my cave and I fell into the sky... It was a terrifying dream so I know how poor dwarves feel :).

Haha, it does sound like some of the writers are dwarf fortress fans.

This makes me want to buy the game now.  Hehehe.

They have to deny it for the same reason -most- games made by large companies with heavy 'influences' from other games deny playing them; lawsuits.
