Sadly, there is no option to dump magma on the asshole nobles. And I saw no elaborate and oftentimes inexplicable deathtraps.

But yeah, much of the other stuff is pretty eerie.

There's a huge golem gauntlet before the anvil, if that counts <:

Also, I really noticed exactly all of that as well. It made the game just that much better, they even have the reward based society that DF usually has; do something epic and be worshipped like a god, literally (like the golem guy Paragon, forgot his name :V). Just like where in DF you give your legendary armorer/weaponsmith the nicest homes.

EDIT: oh and the rest of the game is great too, definitely the best game I've played in a while. Can't wait for Awakening/Return to Ostagar.

"I wonder where they put all the stone?"

I think that was Leliana but it could have been Alistair or Morrigan

It think that was Morrigan.

There is also mention of there being 7 founding dwarfs.

Yeah, the 7 founders rang quite the bell for me :p

7 dwarves is much more likely to be inspired by Snow White (which I'm guessing is what the number of starting dwarves in DF are inspired by)

The first thing I thought about when I started DF mode was "Snow White" :).

Yeah, Orzammar makes the whole game a million times better.
I was always bummed out when I had to leave in order to advance the plot.

They have to deny it for the same reason -most- games made by large companies with heavy 'influences' from other games deny playing them; lawsuits.
From what I read in another thread, some of the programmers making the Sims play DF... Which I attribute as being the main cause for it being the best selling franchise ever. And the reason why it is possible to burn Sims to death.  :D

And their fear of falling in the sky is so funny and a brilliant idea.

Probably borrowed from somewhere long ago. Maybe a sci-fi book.

Fallout 2, in the Ghost Farm near Modoc, the Skag's leader mentioned the same. The Skags are a group of people retreated to underground when the nukes went off; they were down there for too long and were no longer comfortable living on surface (getting nauseous and a feeling of falling into the sky).

I believe something like this is mentioned in a Terry Pratchett book. Probably the Fifth Elephant, though I don't recall exactly.

I'm sure it predates that though. I wouldn't be surprised if it went all the way back to Tolkien, though I don't think it does.

Well, to be fair, 7 is a fairly common number.

Besides, 7 is the second happy number (after 1). I'm thinking that's why they choose it. (If you gotta pick a reason, might as well pick one you like yourself.)

I propose an impromptu rule which forces all TVTropes links to be nested in 5 layers of spoiler/code tags, and must be copied manually into the address bar. Since it will ruin your life. And I am not linking that for you.  ;D

More on-topic, I gotta add my admiration to the Dragon Age implementation of our beloved Dwarf; Of all of the game's starting stories (* that I have played), I felt the Dwarven Noble (which starts in Orzammar) was the most compelling and in character...

Now I just can't for the life of me remember why I haven't gotten around to returning to Orzammar yet...

For a megaproject, I think Orzammar would be pretty challenging. From the picture, it's obvious you would need a LOT of underground z-levels, and the detail to work in (carved statue / detail-wise) would make things difficult. Regarding the game's deep roads, is it possible to build a fortress on the site of an underground passage? I have never tried. (Also, did nobody else notice the magma-fall?  ;D)

Hey we have a mention.

Video Games
Dwarf Fortress is essentially built around this trope. There's even a system in place to automatically generate dwarfy names.
Although manic depressive dwarves are new, as are the extremely sadistic deathtraps, the impressive Malevolent Architecture (usually used to dispose of goblins and nobles), the massive megaprojects built soley for player amusement, the fortress destroying (or sometimes world-destroying) Pointless Doomsday Devices, and their rather bizarre taste in art.

I'm thinking of modding Dwarven Massive Armor in, just for awesomeness' sake ;o

And if we're talking about DA mods anyway, how about some Nugs, I love those little guys  :D
