I just had my first tantrum spiral tonight following a couple deaths from an ambush. I noticed that sometimes after a tantrum the dwarf in question would die, either "struck down" or "bled to death". Is the fortress guard killing them for great justice?

P.S.: I did not have a jail set up (still learning)

The fortress guard does indeed kill people with their beatings.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

I think if you un-assign the Captain of the Guard justice will not be carried out. Otherwise yes, guards and the Hammerer will happily kill everyone in the fortress, then starve to death because they refuse to work.

Hurry and build jails!

This way they have an alternative to being beaten to death.

Like many other things in the game, dwarven Justice is a little unrefined, if still hilarious in its current state.
