Simple 100% Goblin-proof wagon entrance
« on: February 01, 2010, 04:19:58 pm »

Dwarves need a wall adjacent to a ramp to climb it, but I accidentally found that wagons do not, and are happy to travel between ramps and floors.

This is clearly an exploit, as it lets you build an entrance wagons can use but goblins cannot.

That will let wagons in and out, but your dwarfs would all be trapped inside.

Who needs dwarves outside?

That said, this should probably be filed under the bug reports.

Such ramps may allow wagons in and out of your fort, but the pack animals will be out of luck, and no trading will happen until everyone is at the depot.

Also, this:

001096 □ [dwarf mode][trade]   (Report) caravans can use ramps that aren't connected to walls

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Nobody said everyone had to use that exit. You could just as easily have a one tile wide entrance way for everything else. But yeah, that's glitchy. D:

Dwarf fortress is ahead of us in terms of hover-craft technology.

This surprises you? They've got quantum-entanglement remote control systems built out of stone cogs.

I discovered this by accident and seemingly either exploited it while I could, more or less when I used 'D'epot access, or worked around it to have it make more sense. Either way, I found it rather odd when I stumbled across it.

Now that I think of it, Bloodfist absolutely abuses this function. That's truly one strange ship. The spirits invested in it are warping physics in order to assist those who use the ship.

100% Goblin-proof, exploit-free wagon entrance:

G = drawbridge
D = depot

Code: [Select]
                 G...............G.........G
To outside  <--  G...............G.........G  --> To fort
                 G...............G.........G
                                       DDD
                                       DDD

The rightmost drawbridge stays up most of the time, sealing dwarves in. The left 2 stay down, so the caravan sees a path to the depot and takes it. Once the caravan is unloading, raise the middle drawbridge, open the right one, and bring your stuff to trade.

The space between the left and middle drawbridges is where the traps go, be they of the stonefall/cage/weapon type or the pressure plate & magma/water type.

Not to worry Calculus, as a believer, I will make sure it doesn't go to waste.

To the dorf pulling the lever, the lever is just a lever. The magma pouring out of the mountainside is just a coincidence. To the dorf designing a pump stack from the magma sea, it is just that: a pump stack. No specific reason for it. It will never do anything.

Ultimately, wouldn't this be pointless if the wagonless traders can't also reach your depot? I was under the impression that you can't trade until all the traders are at the depot. Or am I missing something here?

I'd personally use it for two things. Shortcut for the wagons. Letting the wagons out, as I'm likely to forget to do so and have them go insane.

Keep in mind, enemies can still shoot arrows through the ramps.

100% Goblin-proof, exploit-free wagon entrance:

G = drawbridge
D = depot

Code: [Select]
                 G...............G.........G

                 G...............G.........G

The space between the left and middle drawbridges is where the traps go, be they of the stonefall/cage/weapon type or the pressure plate & magma/water type.

If the leftmost drawbridge stays down the whole time, why even have one?
