Dunc's Algomusic
« on: February 01, 2010, 01:27:32 pm »

Hello everyone, it's been a while since I last wandered here. I'll post this here, that's where it fits best I think.

Dunc's Algomusic is a simple program that generates music randomly, either by randomising it itself or by having you input some letters and/or numbers.
It can be downloaded here or here (both same version, around 600 Ko).
The interesting thing about it is that it is a seed-based system, just like the map generation of Dwarf Fortress, so when you input a name and like what you hear, you can type it in later and get the same result.
For example, you can type "Dwarf Fortress" (minus the quotation marks) and you'll get a lively tune that'll fit nicely with the game, because we got lucky. You can also try and type your nickname, or whatever you want, and see what you get.
I also tried "Boatmurderd", and I must say, I really like this one. It has a slowly growing tension feel to it that makes you remember certain bloody events...

Note that the names are case-sensitive, so "Boatmurdered" will turn out completely different from "boatmurdered", but letter placement makes no difference, as well as which one you capitalize (but it as to be the same number of capital letters) so "Boatmurdered" and "oatburMdered" will be the same.
So there you have it, try it, see what you get and you'll most certainly stumble on little gems that will make you fire this little program up again and again.
Now am I a good salesman or what ? Too bad it's free.

If you are using Windows Vista and get an "Illegal Memory access" error message, you have to disable Data execution protection. You may also have to set the program to XP compatibility and be using an admin account.

Dunc's Algomusic was developed by Duncan Timiney
Original (?) webpage can be found here.

Update : the 5.6 version can be downloaded right here. Thanks to Duncan himself for the link !
Also, check out Ataxia II, a sweet remake of Chaos, an old ZX Spectrum game, also by Ducan Timiney

This is really great!

However almost everything this thing produces has some dark atmosphere in it. I love the "Carp". I can almost see Urist McFisher running in fear.

This really needs an export feature. Seriously, it demands one.

Anyway, I've been trying out some forum usernames. They usually don't fit, but so far I've found "Sean Mirrsen" and "Cthulhu", without the quotation marks of course, to produce some good songs.

EDIT: Been making a list of those now. Hippoman didn't make the list as a good piece of music, but deserves mention for... Well, just listen to it out yourself.

This is EXTREMELY useful. Seriously, I have a bad enough taste in musing that I'll basically have this running from early morning to late evening, with no need to ever in my life buy or download music ever again! This is awesome!  :D

"Robotic Philosophy" is really damn awesome. Also, I rather like my username's output.

Wow this is pretty great.

I suggest listening to the name "No Time for Giant Cave Spiders" as it seems to fit really good.

Robotic Philosophy was pretty nice as well. My name sounds half retarded when it plays.

It takes some fooling with around but you can get some really neat songs out of this that hopefully don't give a headache.

I've tried to list a bunch of good ones, hope you like em :)

1. 34 Stars Till Entropy
2. Shields Down! -=system failure=-
3. Raiders! HAHA
4. 3.14 Eat Pi All Day
5. My Cat Knows Kung-Fu
6. Doctor, we're losing him!
7. Pickaxe No More!
8. :) Smile It's a New Day
9. Sand Castles (HFS Remix)

Hidden Track. a/s/l

(8, 9 are my favorites the rest are so-so)

By the way, "HFS" is an interesting track: starts with seeming cacophony of 80's game sound (at least that's my opinion), which is, I'd say, related to DF graphics (and randomness). Then a quite brooding but major theme starts, that gradually becomes more and more brooding. I just wish I could find a title for HFS's opening as this seems to illustrate the time when you've just discovered adamantium on your map.

Edit: My nickname turns out quite cheery, but repetitive later on. "Dwarf Fortress 2010", on the other hand emits foreboding and epicness, and sinister and great deeds, (while being quite dissonant).

Check out "The Lord Of The Rings", guys! A real smash, I must say.

On a different note, I can make one of two conclusions after being introduced to this program: either all music is made of randomly arranging notes and calling it a theme or you can take lessons of inspiration from computer and this program.

Stozu Hatredghoul the Jackal of Lies is a little too light, but has a good menacing undertone throughout.

Cannibal Elves in the Wells is pretty awesome, I'll have to admit.

Babysnatcher has a nice feel to it, and does sound sneaky, like the music that plays in Spongebob or Star Wars when someone sneaks around.

Cannibal Elves in the Wells is pretty awesome, I'll have to admit.

"A Vile Force of Darkness" is the sequel.

Song List, continued.

10. Swimming in the Moat
11. Pull the Lever
12. The Crumpet
13. Elven Zerg Rush
14. Fey Mood

I say "Fey Mood" and "The Crumpet" are the pick of the the second batch.
"Elven Zerg Rush" has a rather comical sound to it though.

Feaster of Babies starts out simply and quickly expands into this very malevolent orchestral score.  It's pretty awesome.
