(Political) Independent News Sources.
« on: February 01, 2010, 06:45:50 am »

No Multimedia Corporate News Providers.  If they make money off of selling news, it's not allowed.  This thread is for sharing independent political, (or sociological) interviews, public speeches or articles.  The source needs to explain themselves well, use evidence or cite sources.

Why?  Because I don't trust a source that makes a net profit off of selling what people want to hear.  The more controversial the content, the more I'm going to like it.

If I see the word Liberal or Conservative used as a slur, I'm locking this thread.

I'll start:
http://www.youtube.com/user/talkingsticktv
Talkingsticktv is a youtube channel which solely uploads interviews and public speeches.

You should not expect politically independent news.  Allow me to explain.

More then one third of the American population claims to be independent.  However their claims are mostly a matter of posturing, studies of focus groups show that most of them have consistent ideological views.  The actual number of real independents is about 10% of the population.  Now, discount the apathetic ones.  Doesn't leave you with too many people to run or pay attention to an independent media outlet, does it?

Look for honest news outlets.  Look for outlets that know what the hell they're talking about.  Look for outlets that get into the meat of the issues instead of treating politics like a horserace.  But do not look for independent outlets,  because that's just someone selling you a load of bullcrap.

I said independent.  I never said impartial.  I will edit my opening post stating that the source they link needs to cite sources/use quotes/explain themselves well.

Independent in the sense that they don't make any money? You mean like blogs? I know a few independent news sources, but they are even more unreliable. They're still catering to a certain audience, and without money on the line, they don't even have to bother to be correct or credible.

Associated Press - The obvious one. News stations such as CNN, MSNBC, BBC, FOX typically take news from AP and apply their "spin" onto it.

AP main site info and creed:

National Public Radio (NPR:US) and it's affiliates always have a multitude of angles and opinions: Not merely the typical "This news station favors liberal/conservatives while having a token idiot punching bag from the other side".

The other thing about NPR is that they do really in-depth coverage of stories and long interviews so you get a lot more depth regarding whatever topic it is, including analysis by multiple experts and intelligent discussion and so forth

It's pretty much the gold standard for news

NPR is also cool because it's not just news.
They've got lots of things.

Yeah they have lots of interviews with any type of interesting or important person you can imagine. Nights and weekends they have music shows and other interesting stuff like This American Life.

Any one ever watch any of the TED videos?

http://www.ted.com/

Smart people doing their thing and making even difficult topics easy to understand. Seems to be a lot of passion in the talks and genuine passion by the speakers.

This might fit in with what you're looking for, I know that I can spend a few hours there just listening.

The onion is matter-of-fact, which is something most news sources lack.

I'm not 100% sure if he get's paid*, so I don't know if this counts or not, but it's still awesome.

Hehe, haven't checked it in a while...
Quote
Last week: President Obama rejects an international treaty banning landmines.
This week: Obama announces massive escalation of the war in Afghanistan.
Next week: Obama will receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
It's like the onion but it's real...

*Actually, he probably does, but I'm linking it anyway.
